G'nir

G'nir

G'nir finished unpacking his things and setting them to their places in
the Weyrleader's weyr. He stood middle of the bedroom, looking around. He
needed to talk with the Headwoman about the furniture and setting up the
extra room for Grilec. But that could wait. He flopped down to his large
bed, back first and arms spread wide. "Mine!" he roared. "All mine!" He
felt an amused chuckle at the back of his mind. **Oh, come now, don't
pretend you didn't want this Nirreth,** G'nir said.

}: Of course I did, I'm a bronze after all," the dragon replied. He was
curled up comfortably to his new ledge.

** I have wanted this ever since...well, ever since I realized I could
have it,** G'nir said. When had that been? They day he Impressed Nirreth?
No, it
had been even before that, when he had been Searched. It had been a
ordinary day in Beryl Plains hold, until...

~*~flashback ~*~

"Dragons! Dragons! They are landing!" the boy run yelling a cross the
hold's corridors. Curiosity drew Grinir and his brothers out to the
courtyard. In
deed, seven dragon had landed to the hold, their presence somehow managed
to diminish the hold's buildings. It was a sight that made Grinir's heart
beat faster. One dragon was bronze, rest were blues and greens.

"We are on a Search. The Queen of Dragonsfall flew long and high and has
laid a massive clutch whose size has not seen in thousand Turns, since
ninth
Pass ended. We are invoking our ancient rights to Search hold and hall
for candidates," the bronzerider declared loudly. That brought out their
father, the Lord Holder. The blues and greens spread out among the hold
populace that had come out to gawk the rare sight. When was last they seen
so many dragons at once?

The bronzerider and Lord holder locked into a discussion, well, more like
an argument, but that didn't interest Grinir. He was more interested of
the blue dragon that was sniffing him out. Fascinated
actually. How wonderful it would be to ride such magnificent creature!

}: This one, :{ Galerith remarked to his rider.

** He looks almost over-age,** Sh'lua said doubtfully. "Hey, there," He
said out aloud, "how old are you?"

"Me? Twenty," Grinir was surprised when the rider addressed him.

** Just bellow the age limit and they wanted older candidates. Can't get
much older than this one.**
"Would you like to come to the Weyr and become
a candidate? Galerith seems to think you have what it takes to Impress one
of these big bullies," Sh'lua asked and patted his dragons neck fondly.

"Me?" Grinir was stunned. Thoughts swirled around his head.
He was Lord Holder's son, but he was third son. What he had in store for
life was marriage with a girl who bored him to tears and maybe a minor
hold
for himself or some other position in the hold. And he would always be the
third. But if he went with the riders, he could Impress. A Bronze, nothing
less wouldn't do for a Lord Holder's son. And bronzeriders led, they led
the wings, the Weyrhold. He was born and bred to lead. He could be the
Weyrleader. An ambitious glow lit to his pale grey eyes. "I accept."

Of course his father threw a fit and accepted none of it. So, Grinir took
matters to his own hands. He exchanged few private words with the
bluerider. After the night had fallen and the darkness had silenced the
hold, he climbed out from the window, with just one bag slung over his
shoulders. He gave the Watch-wher a quick scratch and hurried over the
fields. At the edge of the forest, the blue dragon and his rider waited
for
him. His father was furious at first, but forgave when month later, he
walked way from Hatching Sands with Nirreth.

~*~

G'nir got up and walked to the weyrledge. He leaned against Nirreth and
gave him a good scratch at the eyeridge. Together they surveyed their
domain.
"Ours!" the dragon's roar echoed his.
