Unbreakable

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 6th July 2010

Characters: Rhosyn, J'ren
Description: Rhosyn and J'ren meet in a tunnel and have a chat.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 13 of Turn 5

J'ren turned from one hallway to another, merging into the line of people
that traversed the hallway and found himself alongside the short stature of
the woman who had become known to everyone in River Bluff. "Weyrwoman."
J'ren's greeting was polite, and warm, his smile matching his tone. He
towered above the woman. While some didn't care for her ways, J'ren had yet to have a problem with her. Of course, he had yet to really work with her directly either. "Good day to you."

"Good day to you as well Wingsecond," she replied in kind as she kept
walking. She was a little better at using the main tunnels, but wouldn't
venture out past that by herself yet. "Where are you headed?"

"To my weyr, actually." J'ren inclined his head, merely a vague gesture in
response to his words. "Going to look over some of the new formations,
make sure I have them properly memorized. And you?"

"I'm supposed to meet with most of the Weyr's fostermothers. Have to
figure out who has how many children and all of that.." One of her duties
was to assign Weyrbrats to the proper fostermother and she took it
seriously. They might be future riders and should be brought up well.

"Ever working. I do hope you find some time to relax." J'ren clasped his
hands behind his back, glancing to the woman as he walked beside her.

"Once I figure out what I'm doing, I think I'll have more time. Now, I'm
having to scramble to learn what I need to." Of course it didn't help that
there wasn't a proper transition from Zharesti, but Rhosyn was a fighter.
She'd whip the place into shape once she got her legs under her.

"Don't be afraid to ask for help, Weyrwoman." J'ren offered, his voice
warm and his smile matching it. "Many here would be glad to help you
in whatever way they can." An appreciative study was given, brief, but
curious, as if trying to make a decision of some sort.

"K'sedel has been very accommodating and I do have Lenala and Ariau
to delegate to. Once I figure out just what needs delegating and which
one of them is best for it, that is." Rhosyn gave a small self-deprecating
laugh. "Don't worry about me, Wingsecond. I am a lot of things, but afraid
is not one of them."

"I never thought you were afraid." J'ren assured her, his smile growing
wider and he allowed a small chuckle to escape. "I just don't want you to
wear yourself out. There are good people here. Put them to good use."

"I intend to as soon as I realize who and where they are." Rhosyn had met
some of the people she knew she'd be working with, but there were others
she still hadn't seen. That didn't mean she hadn't already scheduled a day
for that, however. "Pft...a rider's work is never done. A Weyrwoman's work
is never begun."

"I hope that doesn't hold true, Weyrwoman." J'ren commented with a soft
chuckle. He shook his head and clapped his hands together where they held
their position behind his back. "Otherwise the Weyr would be in chaos."

"Can't have that. K'sedel would probably have me exiled." She smiled to
herself. Rhosyn actually thought well of the older Weyrleader. It was nice
to have decades of experience behind her. "What did you think of Zharesti?"

"Why do I have a feeling you have asked that same question before?" J'ren
managed a tight smile. "She was...rather strong willed and certainly didn't seem to care much about what people thought about her. She had her
opinions and wasn't afraid to voice them."

That sounded a lot like herself. What was it that made it a bad thing?
"Maybe I should rephrase...why do people have such a bad reaction
when her name is brought up?"

"Ah, well now, that's a bit of a different question." J'ren's brow furrowed as he considered the question, jaw tightening, then relaxed.
"Zharesti...she had in mind the way things should be. She thought what she
was doing was what was best for the Weyr, but in truth, I don't think she
realized that all it did was demoralize those around her, which is _not_
good for the Weyr. The most unpopular of her decisions was to force
everyone of age in the Weyr to stand, whether that person wanted to or not,
no matter if they were lower caverns workers or craftspeople. There were
quite a few people rather upset by that proclamation."

Rhosyn thought about that. One the one hand, she could think of
a few situations where that would make sense. However, by all accounts
this had not been one of those. "Right...well hopefully I don't manage to
make everyone want to throw me off the Rim, at least during the first few
sevendays leastwise."

"Well, I haven't heard any suggestions that should be done, unlike when
Zharesti was around." There was a soft chuckle from the bronzerider.
"Though I had no intent on doing so even though I disagreed with her
opinions. In truth, I've not heard any complaints." Yet. It was rare, if
nigh impossible, to have a Weyrwoman where no one at all complained.

"I don't..care if people like me either way. However, I do want to do a good job. Breaking a Weyr is not one of my life's ambitions." This was her time to prove herself and she was going to make the best of it. "I'm sure not everyone likes K'sedel, but I bet they respect him."

"Being liked and being respected are two different things." J'ren's comment was dry and there was a twist at his mouth, as if holding back a smile. "I'll not lie to you, people are watching, waiting to see what you do, see if you're anything like the Weyrwomen we've had before, there will be comparisons, but as long as you do what is best for the Weyr and keep in mind the people here are people and they too are part of the Weyr, I think you'll do just fine."

"I appreciate the vote of confidence. Well I'm going that way, but I'm sure
we'll see each other around. Clear skies to you." Rhosyn popped a mock
salute before turning down another tunnel.
