Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 5
"Not chasing?" Meledei asked as she approached the young bronzerider. "R'bul's green is rising, I thought Xemroth might give chase."
"He's not interested. A little too young still, I think." Although the bronze could start chasing any day now. A few of their other clutchmates had started chasing, and now the first green was rising.
"Some of the others have started, but not all." Meledei glanced over at Ri'len who was simply reading. "Evidently not Monilath yet. Probably a relief for Sorsha, and for Ri'len."
"But it will happen." Z'ku wondered how the couple was going to deal with that.
"Yes, it will." Meledei nodded slowly. They were both prepared, though. Ri'len didn't seem to worried - but then again, Ri'len didn't really show much emotion. Not to her at least. The most she'd seen was when Sorsha had hurt her arm and he hovered over her. "I wonder who will be next."
"At least you know it won't be you." Golds took months longer to have their first Flight.
"Probably not, no." When would she rise? Probably not until Elleth was closer to a turn in age. Of course, it could change. Who knew with the way Thread was falling? Meledei wasn't going to hold her breath though. "Maybe Afkica's?"
"It could be any of the greens, really." Z'ku was more concerned with when Xemroth would start chasing. "I wonder, when Elleth rises, if she'll fly faster and farther than other golds. There could be advantages to her size."
"Because she's so small?" Meledei had to admit that could be a decided advantage, even in Threadfall. They would have to find out how to use that effectively. "I didn't think about that. I suppose anything is possible."
"I wonder if it will cause her to produce more eggs. If she flies farther, the Flight should last longer, and they say that produces more eggs."
"Maybe." Z'ku did have a point about that. "Guess we'll have to wait and see, though there's some time before that happens. I wonder who will chase her...will Xemroth do you think?"
"Of course, though we'd have to be very lucky to have a chance of winning." The first time, at least. Xemroth's chances of winning would increase as he gained experience.
"It could happen." Xemroth may not have experience, but maybe if he flew really well, or was more wily than some of the others, he could certainly when. "I bet it won't take him long to win."
"To win any flight, or to win Elleth's?" Z'ku lifted an eyebrow.
Meledei laughed. "I meant any flight, but it will be interesting to see if he is the one who catches my Elleth." Meledei's eyes twinkled in her amusement. "I have a feeling she won't be easy to catch."
"I don't think so either. But that will make it all the more rewarding to catch her." He smiled.
Meledei grinned. "I wonder what her first clutch would be like." The eggs looked similar, but Meledei could also tell the many differences from egg to egg, even from eggs laid by different queens. "How many she'll have, what colours she'll produce."
"I'm sure they'll all be beautiful." His eyes went a little distant as he remembered the day Xemroth found him. "And strong."
"And that is the most important thing, not how long the flight lasts or who has the biggest clutch, but that the dragons are well and yes, strong." Meledei hoped they were. She hoped she and Elleth could contribute to the Weyr, to prove themselves to their Weyrleaders, to not disappoint. She didn't want to disappoint.
"I'm going to head back to my weyr and read until this is over." If F'gol won, she'd find out eventually, but she didn't really want to hang around and gawk. "I'll catch you later, okay?"
"Okay." Z'ku hoped _he_ would catch _her_ later.
