Doing Lines

Writers: AL, Jane

Characters: J'ren, Teykara
Description: J'ren makes Teykara help him with hidework as part of her punishment for her disrespect.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 13 of Turn 5

Teykara knocked on the door of the Wingsecond's office after breakfast, as ordered. The man was going to be tiresome - she just knew it.

"Come in." J'ren called out. He glanced up long enough to greet Teykara with a 'Good morning' before he bent down to finish writing out something on some parchment. "Teykara, have a seat."

The greenrider settled into one of the chairs facing the desk.

J'ren finished his sentence, then reached over to two stacks of hides beside them. He slid them over to Teykara then gave her a pen. "Those need to be copied, accurately and legibly." The instruction was short and he immediately returned to his previous task.

"Is this like harper class," Teykara asked with a laugh. "Doing lines?"

"Get to work." J'ren wasn't going to dignify that with much of an answer. The girl needed to learn a few things.

The greenrider sighed and settled down at the desk. There was something about riding bronze - or perhaps it was that in combination with Wing Rank - that seemed to go to men's heads. They lost all common sense and reasonableness and began to rely on their rank and authority to carry any discussion. It happened to some, she thought, sooner than it happened to others.

J'ren didn't say anything else except to on rare occasion make a comment regarding a certain record. Every time he finished one, he placed it upon Teykara's pile which wasn't getting depleted as quickly as it was being added to. He could tell she wasn't happy, but he wasn't there to cheer her up.

As she wrote Teykara started to hum under her breath. A catchy little ditty about a dolphin exploring the coast, looking around headland after headland and finding only more headlands. It was endless - which was what she suspected the paperwork would be.

J'ren glanced up at Teykara, an eyebrow raised, but he didn't comment. Instead he turned back to his work. She wasn't going to like what he had in store for her. They whittled away at the pile, but it didn't look any smaller when J'ren called for them to stop than when they had started. The stack that Teykara had put to the side to indicate she was finished only contained a couple of parchments. "Take those," J'ren motioned to the finished ones, "to the record room, then have some breakfast and report to me as soon as you are done with that and are prepared for drills."

Teykara nodded. "All right." She got to her feet and picked up the papers.

"After drills," J'ren rose from his seat and began to straighten his desk, "I want you to report to me again as soon as you and your dragon are cleaned up."

If that's the way it was going to be, Teykara supposed it was unalterable. Certainly complaining wouldn't help. "Here?"

"Yes, here." J'ren finished stacking his papers, then moved around to the door. He opened it for her and motioned that she leave first. She may have been rude, but that didn't mean he had to be ungentlemanly.

"See you later then," Teykara said amiably. They might be going to the same Wing drills but that was an entirely different thing.

J'ren nodded. He waited until she exited, then did so himself, closing the door after him.
