"M'galec! Just the man I wanted to speak to," said J'an.
"Weyrlingmaster? You need to see me?" M'galec asked he politely closed the medical report he had been reading and tucked it under his arm in order to give J'an his undivided attention. "How can I be of assistance?"
"Placements for the soon to graduate weylings," replied the Weyrlingmaster. "I've drawn up some provisional listings, but I'd like your opinion."
"Of course!" M'galec was very good at giving advice, after all.
J'an spread the lists out. "I know you haven't been here too long yet, but sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can help." To his mind there were only a few uncertainties, and some were obvious. For example young N'lies. The brownrider was only thirteen, and therefore would be staying with them as an assistant until he was of age.
"Any way I can help, sir," he said as offered the weyrlingmaster a seat.
M'galec leaned over the list, scanning for names he recognized. He didn't know _all_ the weyrling's names yet, but Dwarkanath could help him remember their dragons if he was stuck.
"I think G'pol has potential," said J'an. "But I'm not sure if the Weyrleader's wing is for him, temprament wise."
"I remember nothing that would suggest that he would not have the temprament for the Weyrleader's wing, but I must admit I didn't work with G'pol long enough to dispute your opinion. Perhaps you saw something in his earlier training that I was not aware of," his second replied with a slight frown. It was one of the drawbacks of being new.
Perhaps his advice would not be valuable in this case. "May I ask what aspect of his temprament concerns you?"
"He's impulsive, tends to act before thinking," stated J'an. The Weyrleader was known as a strict disciplinarian, especially when it came to wingmatters.
"Hmm..." M'galec considered the young man a moment. "I haven't noticed his impulsiveness so much. Perhaps his Blooding scared it out of him?"
"Could be, could be. What's your opinion of W'lik?"
"I was quite impressed with W'lik's bronze. He will be a powerful dragon one day. But W'lik seems to enjoy his fun just a little too much." Like the time he filled his weyrling mates boots with sweetsand...
"So you'd suggest he goes to a wing with a reputation for handling the wilder riders. We can't hold really hold him back for just for playing the odd prank, he's almost twenty turns."
"Oh, certainly, he should not be held back. But I should think that he would not belong in the Weyrleaders Wing." The young man would learn to settle down. Most riders did. He just hoped the boy would get the idea before he found him on the table in the infirmary... "Sir, have you decided to put _M'gan_ in a wing?"
"It's tricky," replied J'an. "He's of age, but I'm not sure he's mentally ready." Blooding had terrified him, well it would terrify any sane person, but M'gan had taken it very badly. Although as a greenrider there was one other option available. "I was wondering about asking Tsaera if she could take him for a while. That way he'd get used to flying in fall, but at a lower level. I'm just worried that he'd take it too personally if we kept him with us."
"I would rather he took it personally, sir, than endanger our queens by putting a rider in their wing who is too afraid of Thread to protect them properly."
This man really was insufferable! "What about the damage that such a thing might do to his confidence? I'm thinking in the long term."
M'galec resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "And being Threadscored would _raise_ his confidence, sir?"
"I believe he'd learn to take care."
"Of course, sir, it is your choice," M'galec nodded. **There he goes again, trying to be all the weyrlings friends instead of their teacher...**
"What's your opinion of Judella?"
"I don't think Judella is ready to go into a fighting wing. Pivith thinks she can do anything and Judella follows her more often than holding her back. She's had strained wings _twice_ now. I think she still needs to learn that she and her green have limitations."
J'an nodded, at last one thing that they agreed on. "V'srenan? What of him."
M'galec's eyebrows raised in surprise. "I think he is one of the more promising brownriders in this group of weyrlings. Surely you have no doubts about _him_."
"None whatsoever."
M'galec looked at him a bit warily. "Then may I ask why you bring him up? What are you thinking for his placement?" "I'm thinking that he might be suited for the Weyrleader's wing."
Finally! Decision M'galec could stand behind whole-heartedly! "I think that is the wise choice."
