Ednan was trying to find Trellyn. He hadn't really seen much of her lately. She had been sick, he busy working on his swimming and diving skills. He missed her, missed spending time with her, missed talking with her.
"Hey," she replied automatically, startled when she saw Ednan staring down at her as she pulled herself up the ladder that led from the dolphin dock up to the more stable upper dock. "What are you doing out here?"
"Looking for you," Ednan replied and glanced furtively around them. There was no one in earshot. "I've been missing you. We haven't spend more than few minutes in same space lately."
She reached for the towel perched on top of a storage crate and ran it through her hair as she tried to think of what to say to him. Ever since she got back from the Weyr she'd been avoiding him. While it was a stupid idea, she was afraid if he looked at her too long, he'd know what she had done. Or that she'd tell him. He couldn't know, not ever, not if she wanted to keep him. And she did want to keep him, so desperately much, even though it was so hard to look at him, to see him smile at her... "We've just been busy, and you know we have to be careful."
"I know," Ednan sighed. "I plan to walk the tables soon. Then we won't have to be careful any longer. Do you realize that I'm now twenty turns old? Past two months I've spent so much time in water that I shall soon grown fins." There was ambitious burn in his eyes.
Trellyn nodded and looked down at her towel. He'd been talking about walking the tables for a turn now, but it could be another turn or even two before he's allowed, and she didn't know if she could hold it together if she had to abort another pregnancy. Just thinking about having to take another trip /between/ like that... she felt her throat tighten and her eyes burn, and she made to run the towel through her short hair to hide the dropping tears that fell on her cheeks.
"Trellyn?" Ednan asked. He sensed something. Something was not quite right.
"You just can't count on walking though you know," Trellyn said finally, fatigue in her voice. She still couldn't look at him and kept her eyes down at the towel. "We still have to be careful, to hide, so nobody suspects..."
"Yes, I know. It's not something we can declare right a way after I walk the tables. That would raise too many questions too," Ednan said. He was so tired of this situation. Tired of hiding, tired of being an eternal apprentice.
She wondered briefly if she should suggest they stay away from eachother for awhile? At least until she could start to get her emotions back under control... but she knew he'd only want to know _why_ and she was pretty sure that any sort of confrontation would break her. "I know." she said finally, pulled out of her thoughts by Ednan's searching eyes. "We'll just have to wait, and then hope that you don't get sent out on assignment right after you walk."
"That too," Ednan groaned.
"I'd better go." she heard the tired strain in her voice but could do nothing for it so continued, "We've got class together tomorrow, so I'll see you then."
"See you," Ednan said with subdued voice. He touched her arm briefly when she passed him. Shards, the whole situation was so frustrating. He wished he could be openly with her, wrap his arms around her and hold her. She seem so tired, in need of comforting. And he couldn't give that comfort. Wasn't allowed.
