Briata

Briata

Cassa stood in front of the door, taking a moment to collect her
thoughts. She tucked several stray hairs behind her ear and checked
to ensure that her dress was not wrinkled. The young woman had
briefly worked under Thalia when she was Lady Holder, but since the
death of the Lord Holder, she had helped where needed. Now, with the
recent marriage of the Lord Warder, she had the chance of getting a
better job, serving his new wife. Taking a deep breath and letting it out,
she raised her hand and knocked.

"Come in!" The voice that beckoned was bright, cheerful and the smile
that greeted Cassa as she entered was equally so. Briata stood and
nodded politely to the girl, then motioned for her to take a chair.
"Please, sit down, make yourself comfortable. You're Cassa, am I
correct?"

"Yes, my Lady," the girl said taking a seat and placing her hands in
her lap. She tried to sit up as straight as possible, hearing her
mother's voice in her mind chastising her for bad posture. She
glanced for a moment at the Lady Holder, surprised at how young she
was.

"Why don't you tell me a little about yourself." Briata requested
amiably as she took her seat once more and faced the other young
woman. She looked familiar. It was probably they had passed one
another in the hold, but had yet to officially meet.

"Ok." She paused for a moment, composing her thoughts. "Well, I've
been here all of my life. My father helps in the archives and my ma
is an Assistant Headwoman. A few Turns ago, I worked for Thalia, the
former Lady Holder." She wondered if it was permissible to mention
Thalia, but she had to, to show she had experience. "I helped her get
dressed, do her hair, attended events with her if she wanted, and
anything else she needed. Now, I help my mom and sometimes work in
the kitchens. But," she admitted, "that isn't nearly as fun as
working with you would be." She stopped talking, wondering if she had
said enough, or maybe too much at the end.

Helped her get dressed? Couldn't Thalia dress herself? Well, that
was one thing Briata didn't think she'd need help with, unless it was
a fancy dress like her wedding dress had been with the ties in the
back and unreachable by her. Briata giggled at the last comment.
"Well, I am going to need some assistants, and someone with previous
experience would be nice. What else did you do for Lady Thalia,
beyond helping her with her grooming?"

Cassa flushed a little, wondering why the Lady Holder was laughing and
if that was a bad thing. In answer to her question she explained,
"Just, spend time with her mainly and talk or play music if she
wanted. And, if she had a message to be sent or wanted to buy
something or meet with someone, I helped arrange that. Sometimes, we
would help her respond to letters." Although, at the time she had
been one of the younger assistants and so had not been entrusted with
much on her own. "Really, whatever she needed."

"Well, I might need a bit more help with administrative duties."
Briata wasn't the sort to really have someone fuss over her quite so
much. "Which could require quite a bit of writing. Do you think
you're up for that?"

"That would be great," she replied eagerly. She had been told that
she was a good writer, and not just by her parents. "That would be
interesting and allow me to be creative." Yes, it would definitely be
more interesting than sitting and sewing, or helping choose outfits
for events.

"Well, if you're up for it, I'll be glad to have you." And it would
be nice to have someone to talk to. Perhaps they would become friends
- that was definitely something Briata could use. "Perhaps we can go
over more details tomorrow, first thing in the morning?"

"Yes, of course." Cassa tried not to seem to eager. Her parents
would be so happy.

"Good. Then, if you'll meet me around the eight candlemark, here, we
can get started." Briata stood up and offered her hand in a friendly
gesture.

Cassa stood as well, shaking the new Lady Holder's hand, a large smile
on her face. "Thank you, my lady," she said with a curtsy. "See you
tomorrow."
