An Issue of Respect

Writers: Ainsley
Date Posted: 30th March 2009

Characters: Yara, Iasion
Description: Yara has an unpleasant run-in with one of the apprentices.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 2, day 2 of Turn 5

Yara took long even strokes through the saltwater enjoying the feel of the early morning sun. It would be hot today. In short order she was joined by two of the dolphins of the local pod and she swam with them for awhile, finally taking a hold of the dorsal fin of the female and riding for some time. When they circled back toward the shore Yara stopped to give scratches and relay her thanks to the enthusiastic duo. She loved her craft and the beautiful creatures with whom she associated. Hopefully, someday soon she would have her own dolphin partner.

Coming out of the water she noted two apprentices a ways up the beach. They were obviously arguing and the boy was standing threateningly over the girl who was probably at least three turns his junior. As she approached, Yara recognized the older apprentice as Iason. She'd had him in a class before and knew he him as someone who did not approve of female apprentices, or crafters in general.

"Is there a problem?" she asked as she neared.

"Like it's any of _your_ business," Iason said snidely while the girl just shook her head quietly.

"Well, both of you probably have classes you should be getting to," Yara answered ignoring his rudeness. Though they probably still had between quarter and a half a candlemark, it wouldn't hurt to send them on their way.

"_Still_ not your business," Iason stated.

Yara had always had just a bit of a temper, though in recent years she had learned to control it rather well. Nonetheless, her voice was steely when she answered, "Disrespect for rank, however, _is_ my business."

The younger apprentice squirmed uncomfortably while Iason sneered. "I respect those that have earned my respect."

"And by walking the tables I _have_ earned a certain level of respect from apprentices. If you don't choose to respect the rank the Hall has bestowed, perhaps you are in the wrong Hall," she replied hotly.

"How dare you say I'm in the wrong Hall! Sharding females shouldn't even be in the Hall at all!" With this statement, Iason stormed away.

Yara watched Iason retreat with a grim expression before turning with concern to the awe struck first year apprentice. "You're sure you are all right?" The girl nodded in the affirmative and Yara really didn't want to push her for more information at this point. "Very well, go ahead on to class then."

As she watched the girl go, the journeywoman thought about the interaction. She would prefer to handle this on her own, but that kind of blatant disrespect and open hostility needed to be reported to Master Mahantan. Looking back toward the ocean, Yara sighed wishing she had extended her swim with the dolphins just a bit longer and avoided this unpleasantness. Ah well, this too was her duty to the Hall, though less pleasant than some others she might perform.
