"Ma'am?" Alydelle's voice was soft as she approached the dolphineer, a small pile of parchments in her arms. She stopped a foot or so away, glanced up, but didn't hold the journeywoman's gaze. "I...I have some papers for you."
"Thank you, Alydelle." Trellyn replied in a flat voice as her eyes fell on the apprentice's growing belly. She could feel the burning in her eyes as tears wanted to form, but she looked away and refused to allow them to. The girl just brought back too many memories from the last few days.
After her trip /between/, Trellyn had stayed with Erita. She'd sent a note to the Hall saying she was sick so they wouldn't go looking for her. She ended up staying five days. Once she had started bleeding the ramifications of what she'd done had finally hit. Physically it hadn't hurt as much as she'd thought it would, but emotionally it was much much harder. She cried as Erita held her, and when Erita had gone to fight Thread, she'd cried alone, curled up in a ball on her couch. Eventually she'd run out of tears and a sort of numbness overtook her.
She'd been back at the Hall three days now. Word of her illness had spread, so if she looked drawn and haggard, people assumed she was still recovering. It gave her a bit of an excuse really, she could just sit there; not eating, not talking, and people left her alone. They all thought she'd feel better soon, get back to normal. She didn't know if she'd ever feel normal again.
Alydelle held the papers out to Trellyn, but the journeyman didn't take them. The apprentice shifted from foot to foot, uncertain. There was a look upon Trellyn's face and the younger girl wasn't sure what to make it. It spoke of sadness and regret. Had she done something? Why would Trellyn look at her like that? They didn't generally spend time with one another, so what _could_ she have done to bring about such thoughts to the elder dolphineer? Was it something she had said? Unlikely as it was considering how _little_ she had said, Alydelle couldn't help but think it must have been. "Ma'am? Is...is something wrong?"
Trellyn looked back at the girl just long enough to take the papers from her and then turned away, making as if to read them. "No, nothings wrong. I'm just a bit distracted."
Alydelle nodded. The journeywoman's expression seemed at odds with her verbal assurance, but Alydelle knew better than to contradict a superior. She stood there, hands clasped behind her back and waited silently. The baby seemed to be disturbed by the lack of noise, for the child decided to move at that point, making Aly feel like she had bubbles in her stomach. She placed hand upon her belly, a reaction that had become automatic already.
"Is there something else you needed?" Trellyn asked. Even though her back was still to the girl, she could hear soft movements and knew she hadn't left the room yet. If she would just leave, maybe Trellyn could get control of herself again.
"Oh, uh...I need to take those back once you've signed them." The apprentice explained, shifting from foot to foot. There was something that wasn't quite right though Alydelle couldn't put her finger on it. She just knew that something was wrong, something with Trellyn though she had no idea why.
*Shards!* Trellyn thought as she actually _looked_ at the papers for the first time and saw that they did need her quick signature. She signed them quickly and then turned back to the girl and handed them over. "Here, and thank you for waiting." She turned back quickly and stared at the wall, her eyes unfocused, willing herself to keep it together until the girl left.
"Thank you ma'am." Alydelle muttered. She turned to go, though paused at the door, wondering what was wrong. Well, it wasn't like she and the journeywomen were particularly friends so it wasn't like Alydelle could do anything to help. The young apprentice gave Trellyn a small smile, then left the elder to her own thoughts.
