"No, I wouldn't have." The young woman insisted with the stubbornness of a toddler not about to be denied. "I wouldn't have married off. Anyone I married would have had to stay on the Moonflower - just as you should."
"You can't keep us all onboard," Kellin protested, smiling at the young woman's fervour. "There'll be no room for passengers."
"I know that. But you aren't one of the ones who should go." Menore muttered, looking away and shifting her feet. She took a deep breath then let it out slowly. "But if you really insist then there's nothing I can do about it."
"You can wish me well in my new life," Kellin suggested, then added in an amused and thoughtful tone, "Of course, the Sungazer has to agree to accept me, yet."
"I...I do wish you well." As much as she wanted Kellin to stay, she didn't want to wish her cousin ill. "I wish you the best of happiness."
"Not all change is bad, Menore. In fact, weren't you working on a particular change of your own?"
"If you're talking about _him_...no." Convenience was all she was in that regard and Menore wanted more. Thought part of her said that at least she would have him, she just couldn't respect herself if she gave in simply for the sake of convenience.
"Not working on that any more? And where is he, anyway. I probably need to have a talk with him about this too."
"There's nothing to work on. He doesn't love me, so why should I bother?" Menore wrinkled her nose. "As for where he is, he's taken his own trip on his original riverboat. He should be returning soon."
"Good. I'll leave him a note - with you, if I may." That would do the pair of them good. Make them at least see each other. They were dimglows, both of them. Menore for being so stubborn, Mehan for being so cautious. At least Kellin had figured out what she wanted and had set about getting it.
"If you wish." Menore agreed hesitantly. "When do you plan on leaving permanently?"
"If you want me to stay on the Moonflower for the first round trip after she's back in the water, I will." The riverboat should be ready to go in a month's time if the workmen were on time. The usually were since they would have another boat booked in hard on the heels of the Moonflower's departure. Then a round trip up and down the Nettleweed River was a twenty-six day journey. She could plan on being aboard the Sungazer by the start of the third month, if Menore wanted her for that first trip, otherwise early in the second month.
"I think...that might be best." It would give her more time to get used to the idea. "Have Taleb work directly with you, switching off. Eventually get him on the full shift to sort of ease him into it." Menore also hoped that it would give Kellin more time to change her mind.
"All right. Now all I have to do is ask Lineal." Kellin thought he would be willing to accept her, but sometimes it was easy to misjudge the very easy going ones, like the Sungazer's captain. "I'll let you know what he says."
Menore nodded. So who was she going to go to when she needed to vent? Especially about Mehan? The girl sighed. "I have some stuff I have to get done. Let me know if we need to discuss anything further."
"I will. We're in port tomorrow but leaving the day after. And next time we're back the Moonflower will be in the water." It didn't matter at all that she was planning on leaving her native boat for another, Kellin would still be pleased to see the Moonflower back in her rightful place.
Menore nodded slowly. She was looking forward to being back on the water. Staying on land so long was making her antsy. Of course, then she would have to deal with Mehan. Well, really, she'd always had to deal with him and she supposed nothing was going to change in that regard.
