Making a Chart

Writers: AL, Francesca
Date Posted: 16th February 2009

Characters: Meledei, G'len
Description: Meledei has a request for G'len.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 5 of Turn 5

"G'len, sir?" Meledei called out tentatively. it was time for their individual instruction, but Meledei actually had a question before she got started. She smiled at the Weyrlingmaster Third and paused, clasping her hands behind her.

"Yes, Meledei?" G'len replied, looking at her and smiling. Weyrlings asking questions was always a good thing.

"I was wondering sir..." Meledei shifted, almost as if she were embarrassed, "I was wondering if you would be willing to give me a full schedule of what we're doing for the entire weyrling training. I'd like to make a chart...well, six charts, really, and put them up in the barracks so that we can all see what we're doing and how far we have left to go."

"Oh!" That came as a complete surprise. He had been expecting a question about dragon growth, or flying, or mating flights. Not this. "Why six?" he asked, to buy some time while he thought over the request.

"One for each month." Meledei explained, tilting her head as she voiced her thoughts. "That way there could be room to write things on it, things like questions and concerns that people don't want to forget about. Sometimes I know that I have a question and it might be something I really want to know, but life just gets so busy and it slips from my mind. That sort of thing."

G'len took down a few notes so he wouldn't forget the details of Meledei's request. He was surprised, and pleased the Weyr's newest queenrider was already taking initiative. "I think that's a good idea, Meledei. I'll bring it up to L'pin tomorrow morning and see what he thinks. Any chart made wouldn't have exact dates, but we should be able to tell you more or less when certain milestones will be." He smiled. "Are you all already worrying about that?" The Hatching had just happened.

"I wasn't expecting specific dates," Meledei assured the Third. "I just want to have the list of things that we're doing. I was hoping for something pretty detailed, you know. Like, this sevenday we'll learn this, this, and this. Next sevenday we'll learn this, this, and this." Was she asking too much? She honestly preferred something more detailed than 'certain milestones' would probably afford.

"I think the idea definitely has merit," G'len said with a smile. "L'pin and I will hammer out the details and we'll try to give you all as much information as possible. If this idea is implemented though," he warned, "you'll be recruited to help out in some way." They already had enough work to do.

"Oh I planned on doing it myself." Meledei didn't have much freetime, but she was willing to dedicate some of that to the project. "I just need the information."

"Even better. Well," he said, making another note for himself, "I'll let you know tomorrow what L'pin and I decide."

"Yes, sir. Thank you."
