Location: Dragonsfall Weyr

"I've been thinking," E'naer said when he dropped the pile of reports
to the Weyrlingmaster's desk.
T'mahl eyed the stack of reports plopped on his desk. "That sounds
ominous."
"After S'ras' accident, safety is been highly on my mind. Next
dangerous stage in weyrling training is learning to flame," E'naer
continued.
"True," the Weyrlingmaster nodded. "What are you thinking?"
"Well, seeing is more effective than just hearing about the dangers.
What if we asked for ovine-carcass from beastcrafters and showed what
dragon's fire does to a flesh? A live ovine would be more effective,
but I don't think beastcrafter would agree to _that_. It is bit too
cruel."
"A bit," T'mahl agreed, supressing a shudder at the thought of roasting
an ovine alive. "But I think you have a good idea there, E'naer. It
might strike a bit of fear into them if they see just how quickly one of
those things can be charred into dust."
"I don't think dragon flame is hot enoug to charr all of it to ashes
but make it well roasted, it does," E'naer said.
"I think one of them we should shave down to it's skin and take
someone's old wherhide coat to put over it so they can see just how
useless it would be as protection against flame. I might be even more
telling. It's almost too bad we can't throw a live Thread on one and
show them what a mess it would make of it." Though the very thought of
getting that close to a living mass made the Weyrlingmaster's palm
sweat.
"Hrrr," E'naer shivered. "I wouldn't even dare to think how to capture
Thread alive."
"Let's not even entertain the possibility." T'mahl could just imagine
all the dragon's reaction to a live Thread being carted into their Weyr.
It was against their nature to just tolerate it.
"Certainly not," E'naer agreed.
"But I like your idea, and we can certainly talk to the herders about
it. Though we need to be sure we're not taking food from the mouths of
the Weyr." Certainly there were some animals that were not suitable for
their tables.
"I'm sure there's something suitable for our needs, like beast died to
disease. I'm under impression that the herders burn those bodies
anyway," E'naer said. "I have some good friends with beastcrafting
background."
"I'll leave it up to you to find the carcasses then. We could even put
them in one of the kitchen's freezers until we need them if we need to."
One of the advantages to having electricity in their Weyr.
"All right," E'naer scribbled down a note to himself. "The kitchen
staff will think we're daff," he muttered.
"Very likely," the bronzerider smiled. "It's good to keep them on their
toes."
E'naer flashed a smile. "That is our job, to keep everyone on their
toes."
