"Why am I not surprised that you were involved?" N'vanik said in a low voice as he sat down next to U'kaiah in the dining hall.
"Don't start with me, N'vanik. You know I wanted to see her gone as much as you did." Despite the biting words, there was no fight in U'kaiah's tone as he looked at his wingrider.
"I'm not saying it was deliberate."
"Good, 'cause it wasn't." The bronzerider ripped his roll in half, wishing he didn't have to have a reminder that he had been partially responsible for Trae's actions.
N'vanik knew U'kaiah wasn't happy about Traelyn leaving, but he needed someone to blame. "That doesn't change what happened."
U'kaiah tossed the roll back his plate, his appetite not what it was moments before. "Well, you can't go back and change what happened. Besides, we should be happy for her. She's a Senior Queen now."
"Yeah, at another Weyr." N'vanik said as he looked out across the dining cavern.
"And you were sharding fool enough to get mad at her about it, weren't you." U'kaiah knew Trae had been upset her last night at the Weyr. He was pretty sure N'vanik had acted like a wherry's arse again.
"I wasn't mad." He lied.
U'kaiah snorted. "Ah, that's right. Trae was crying because she was so happy to be rid of you. I remember now..."
N'vanik turned and glared at his Wingleader. Then he turned away. "She was crying?"
He nodded. "Uh huh. But don't think all those tears where _just_ for you."
The wingrider shrugged slightly. "I'm not worth crying over."
"Yeah, well, I would agree with you there," U'kaiah said with a sarcastic chuckle. "But apparently Trae never felt that way. Was _she_
worth it?"
N'vanik was quiet for a moment. It hurt that she was gone, hurt more than he would admit to himself. But there had been good times in his brief relationship with Trae, and he wouldn't trade those for anything.
"Yeah." He said, quietly. The wingleader sighed. "Well, it's about sharding time you figured that out, N'vanik. It's too bad she's not here to hear you say it."
"Too bad." N'vanik echoed dully. He had come looking for a fight, but there didn't seem to be much fight in him. "Come on, N'vanik," U'kaiah said as he picked up his tray of half-eaten food. "Let's go get drunk."
His first instinct was to refuse. This was U'kaiah, after all. Instead, his mouth turned up in a smile. "Best idea I've heard all day."
