"Tanas, are you ready?" Marida called out tentatively. She didn't want to
nag, but she also didn't want to be late. They were to meet Nikanna and
Carlan for dinner and she had said they would be there at the eighteenth
candlemark. Marida had never met Carlan and had no idea what Nikanna's
husband was like. She hoped that, perhaps, he could be a friend for Tanas
as Nikanna had become one to her.
"Almost," he said, frowning as he entered their common room, running his
fingers through his hair. "I still don't understand why we couldn't eat at
home."
"I just thought it would be nice to eat with some friends." Well, one of
them was her friend anyway. Maybe Carlan would be Tanas'. If her husband
gave him a chance. "It will be nice."
"I guess," Tanas conceded. "But I'm used to your cooking."
Was that a compliment? Marida wasn't quite sure, but she supposed it would
be best to take it as one. "It will be fine."
He brushed a bit of lint from his jacket and decided that he looked properly
presentable. "This is just for dinner, right? We don't have to stay long
afterwards?"
"Well, wouldn't it be nice to spend some time with them?" Marida really
hoped Tanas would open up and be more sociable. Maybe once he got to meet
Carlan...of course, she didn't really know what Carlan was like.
"But what about our chess game?"
"We can continue it tomorrow, or even tonight if we don't get back too
late." Marida had to admit she was a bit surprised. She didn't realise
that Tanas enjoyed the games as much as the question said he did. Or,
perhaps, he simply was trying to find an excuse not to go. She preferred to
think it was the former.
He nodded in satisfaction with her answer. "Then I guess that we'd better go
so that we can get back here."
Marida grimaced a bit, but nodded and moved to the door. She really hoped
that things would go well tonight. Tanas needed to get out more, to have
friends.
