"So are we still going to one of the eastern islands, or did you want to
try someplace else?" B'lamick asked as Tey and Isleth landed on the
ledge next to where he was putting Latarth's riding straps on. The two
had planned a trip to the beach since they'd had early morning drills,
but hadn't talked much about the particulars.
"I thought we'd go to Dolphin Cove," Tey said idly, knowing her
companion would have plenty to say on the subject but not wanting to
jump into it. "Nice just to visit instead of always being sent there on
errands."
He shrugged and did up the last strap before grabbing his pack and securing it to his big bronze. "Sounds fine to me, I'm not picky as long as there is sand and water."
"Good. I don't suppose they'll mind. The watch dragon'll tell us if they do," Tey continued. "And we can have a look around if we want to."
"A look around the Weyr or the beaches?" B'lamick asked, confused and wondering if they were even talking about the same thing.
"The Weyr. Don't tell me you aren't interested? See if it's the sort of place you'd like to transfer to? I don't think looking around the beaches counts as making an informed decision about a transfer."
B'lamick eyed her like she was some twin of Tey's he'd never known existed. "What are you talking about? I don't want to transfer to Dolphin Cove."
"Not even considering it?" Tey asked, rather surprised. Didn't bronzeriders always want to move to a new Weyr where the golds weren't closely related to their bronze? "It's not like we get the chance to move Weyrs every day. Anyway, who was talking about you? _I'm_ thinking about it."
"You!" B'lamick cried, his voice echoing off his weyr walls. "You can't leave!"
"Why can't I? But I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking about it. Didn't you even consider it when the announcement was made? Volunteering?"
B'lamick sighed, relieved that she hadn't decided for sure yet, and annoyed that she made him sound horrible for not wanting to leave his home. "You can't leave because you've just gotten used to your wing, because your family is here, because _I'm_ here."
"Mmm," Tey murmured. "All good points. But Lhara's going to Stand at their Hatching - so she may end up staying. Otherwise ... there'll be Wings there, too, that I can get used to. And you. You could transfer too. What's to keep you here, holder boy?"
He didn't like the sound of her reasoning, it was almost like she'd already made up her mind. "But this is home. This is where all our friends are. You've, you've got your weyr all clean and organized the way you like it. There's no good _reason_ to leave it all for that Weyr."
"N-no. Perhaps not. But it won't hurt to look, will it?" She poked his ribs. "What are you scared of?"
**Of you running away and leaving me** "I'm not scared. I just don't see the point in missing a perfectly good beach afternoon to look at a Weyr that isn't as good as this one."
"How do you know it's not as good? Well, apart from them not having electricity to all areas and still having to rely on communal bathing and having a tendency for floods?" She grinned. "Come _on_ B'lamick. There are plenty of beach afternoons in our future that you can afford to spare _one_."
B'lamick frowned, he didn't want her anywhere _near_ Dolphin Cove if it was any temptation to her. "How about we go to Dolphin Cove another time? I've already all packed for the beach."
"Because they do have beaches, so we can do both, and because they're asking for - and the Weyrleaders here are agreeing to - transfers _now_."
"Please Tey." he pleaded, taking her hand in his. "Not today."
Tey looked at the hand that held hers, then up at her friend's face. "Well, if it's going to worry you that much," she said slowly, "I suppose I can leave it for now."
He grinned and raced to mount Latarth. "Good, eastern islands it is then. I'll have Latarth give Isleth coordinates."
"Yeah." Tey heading for her patiently waiting green, though her thoughts were still very much with Dolphin Cove Weyr. "Yeah, that'll be nice."
