Stomach Pains

Writers: Francesca, Paula
Date Posted: 19th December 2008

Characters: E'naer, Kamalia
Description: Kamalia's green is in pain and she calls E'naer for help.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 10 of Turn 4

Kamalia slipped on comfortable clothes and put her hair back in a
runnertail, wondering if she had time to see her brother before lights
out. He would probably be practicing at this time, or eating a late
meal. Alaudath was resting in her wallow, tail curled around herself.
She would hopefully sleep until her rider returned. Kamalia was
walking out of the barracks when a sharp pain hit her and her hands
automatically moved to her stomach. "Ow!" A rush of emotions hit
her: worry, fear, and waves of pain. Confused, Kamalia felt around
her stomach but, no, it didn't hurt. Why was she in pain?

}:Ow ow ow ow ow!:{ Alaudath chanted and the weyrling realized, it was
her dragonet's stomach that hurt.

}:Where are you?!:{ the green asked, panicked.

"I'm right here!" Kamalia ran to the dragonet and knelt down beside
her. "What's wrong?"

}:I feel full, too full, like I'm going to explode!:{ Alaudath's eyes
were whirling quickly and, while she wasn't making much noise, her
pain would begin worrying her clutchmates very soon.

Kamalia tried to remain calm as she stroked her head. What was wrong?
None of the other dragonets had seemed sick, and they had done
nothing but attend classes that day. **Shh, it's ok. How long has it
been hurting?**

}:Ow! I hurt now! I want it to go away! Make it go away!:{

The weyrling thought back to their lessons the week before, when they
had learned about dragonhealing. It was hard to concentrate with the
green's emotions merging with her own, but Kamalia did her best.
Alaudath was obviously not complaining about dry skin, and she didn't
look like she had any cuts or scratches. **Does it hurt on the
inside, in your stomach?**

}:Yes! It hurts!:{

Maybe it had something to do with what they had eaten. Either way,
Kamalia couldn't solve the problem on her own. **Call Eillispeth and
tell her your stomach hurts. See if she can tell us what to do, or
have the Weyrlingmaster Third come help.**

}:They'll make my stomach feel better?:{

**Yes, they'll know exactly what to do.**

A dragonet in pain was always a serious thing and high priority.
E'naer didn't dawdle, but vaulted on Eillispeth's back as soon as the
green relayed the distressed message from Alaudath. He didn't even
wait to put on straps. Eillispeth landed in front of the Weyrling
barracks.

"Kamalia, is something wrong with Alaudath?" he asked when he entered.

Kamalia turned towards the Weyrlingmaster Third, relieved he had come
so quickly. "She just woke up and her stomach really hurts. I don't
know what to do."

"Let's see. When did she last ate?" E'naer asked and crouched next to
the little dragon. **Eillispeth, talk to her, calm her down and try to
find exactly what kind of pain,** he instructed his green.

"Not very long ago. Maybe a candlemark? Did she eat something bad?"
It was easier to think now that, with Eillispeth's help, Alaudath was
calming down.

"Or too much or too fast. Did she gorge herself? Sometimes if they eat
without chewing properly, they swallow air and it forms painful gas
bubbles to their intestines. Ask her to lay on her side so I can
examine her belly."

Alaudath obligingly let her stomach be poked, still complaining to her
rider.

"I guess she did eat faster than usual, but I didn't think it was enough
to give her a stomach ache." **I'm so sorry. I should have been
paying more attention.**

}:Will his hands make me feel better?:{ the little green asked, fascinated
that she was being examined.

**Not exactly, but it should help him find out what's wrong, and then make
it better.** Kamalia anxiously waited, hoping nothing serious was causing
the pain.

E'naer pressed rhythmically her belly. "I think it's just indigestion.
Take her outside and walk her around until she feels better."

"Ok." **Come on,** Kamalia told her green encouragingly.

After a bit of grumbling, Alaudath stood and began making her way
towards the exit of the weyrlings barracks. After a few moments,
Kamalia grimaced and pinched her nose. **Eww, what's that smell?**

Alaudath stopped and looked back towards her, a bit embarrassed.
}:Sorry.:{

"That was you?"

}:I feel a bit better now. My stomach doesn't feel as full.:{

Kamalia giggled as another whiff of the smell came towards her.
Waving it away with her hand, she turned back to the Weyrlingmaster
Third. "I think she'll be better soon.

"Oh, yes, definently," E'naer replied laughingly.

Alaudath's pain was slowly going away, which was a relief to both the
dragonet and her lifemate. However, Kamalia still felt like a dimglow,
and a bit angry at herself, that she had made such a simple mistake.
"Thank you, sir, for your help," she said to E'naer seriously. "I promise
I'll be much more careful from now on when she eats." Luckily, the
problem had not been serious.

"You better. One of your main duties as a weyrling is to control her
eating," E'naer said with mildly scolding tone.

Kamalia blushed and looked down. "I know." There was no point
making excuses.

E'naer nodded, she had learned her lesson. "I think you two are just
fine now, so I'll be going."

"Ok. Thank you," she said again. From then on, she would make sure
her full attention was on Alaudath when she ate.
