Cosani

As soon as she was given permission to enter, Cosani walked into the Weyrwoman's office. "I guess I have to ask you if I can Stand, even though I already got Searched at Dragonsfall and everything. I don't get it. Sir ... ma'am ... Weyrwoman." She added hastily, remembering who she was talking to and trying to sound a little more respectful.

"From what I understand, you came to Dragonsfall on your own. You weren't technically Searched by dragons," Traelyn smiled, doing her very best to hide her amusement--and succeeding fairly well. Shards, she was very much her father's daughter. "That's why you have to petition. Please, take a seat. I won't keep you long."

She sat down, trying to keep her face neutral. One finger tapped on the arm of the chair. "There isn't like, a test or something, is there?" A tiny hint of nervousness crept into her voice.

"No, no." She waved a hand dismissively. "You can relax, Cosani. I just want to ask you a couple questions."

"Okay."

Traelyn leaned back in her chair, studying the girl thoughtfully. "I know you weren't Searched, but what made you choose the Weyr for your home?" Rumors did not count as facts for the Weyrwoman, and though she heard some of the history from N'vanik, she wanted to hear it from his daughter's own lips.

"I ... want to be a dragonrider," the girl answered.

She smiled a little at the answer. "Do you understand what it means, to choose that kind of a life? It's not a life of romanticized glory. It's dangerous, full of risk and sacrifice."

"Yeah. I've been to the classes. They talk about that a lot." It was better to risk her life than spend it as a holder, married off to some man and stuck with him and a bunch of brats for the rest of her life.

"What else do the classes say?"

What? Didn't she know? Or did she want her to repeat it to prove she hadn't slept through all the classes? "That dragonriding is hard work, that not everyone Impresses, that the Weyr is a very different place from Holds or Halls ..." The Weyrs were even different from each other. With the weather being so hot, there was a lot more nudity at Dolphin Cove and Cosani was trying to get used to it.

The Weyrwoman nodded. It was interesting to hear what Candidates remembered, because what they repeated was what they deemed most important to take away from the class. "I know it can be hard for someone coming in from a Hold or Hall to cope with the changes. Do you have any questions?" She doubted that Cosani did, but it was customary to ask.

"No."

That figured. Traelyn inclined her head. "You may Stand at the Hatching, Cosani."

Her shoulders sagged just a little with relief. "Thank you." The Weyrwoman _had_ to let her Stand, though. If she had said no, Cosani would have gone to N'vanik and made him change her mind. He could do that ... right? Well, it didn't matter now. She had the permission she needed.
