A Good Starting Point

Writers: Cali, Teresa
Date Posted: 18th November 2008

Characters: T'nel, Narshali
Description: Terainel interviews with one of the assistant headwomen for the opportunity to learn a craft.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 2 of Turn 4

"Good morning Terainel." Narshali greeted the boy as she let him into her office she shared with one of the other assistant headwomen. "Did you have a good breakfast?"

"Good morning ma'am," he smiled "Yes I did, thank you." he was excited about the thought of learning a craft. He hoped the interview went well. Besides it would get him out of kitchen duties
.
She smiled, it was always nice to see a young man with manners. "Go ahead and sit down there." she motioned to the empty seat next to her desk where she sat down herself. "So you want to take up a craft I see? Any idea what or just anything to get you out of drudgework?"

Terainel sat in the chair she had indicated. "Well, in all honesty, a little of both." he grinned "As for what kind of craft, my father taught me a little about Tanning before I left to come here. I thought maybe that would
be a good starting point."

"There's nothing wrong with the truth." Narshali agreed, "I usually find it more productive if I know what I'm working with, and there's nothing wrong with wanting better for yourself than drudgery. Tanning you say? Did you get official apprenticeship started or just family training?"

"Nothing formal. Just a little family training. My Father liked to make his own Runners shoes, so he did alot of his own tanning." He said looking down at the ground. Having to make any reference about his Father always made him a little uneasy.

The assistant headwoman nodded as she started digging through files. "With you wanting to stay as a candidate we don't want you running off to the Tanner Hall, so we could pair you with one of our tanners. Let's see... I knew there was one. Master Tanner Shoulby. He requests a proper fostering due to odd hours, so you'd have to leave the barracks. Is that a problem?"

"No, not a problem for me." his words rushing out of his mouth faster than had wanted. He was a little more excited about getting to learn something new than he thought he was. "I mean," he said a little less hurriedly "That would be fine with me. It would be nice to get out of the barracks. I feel like I have spent a lifetime there already." he said grinning again.

"He's got a bluerider weyrmate," she looked up to see if that elicited a reaction, and was pleased to see that it didn't, especially if he was dragonrider material. "And two other fosterlings about your age staying with them now."

He felt a little rush of excitement, so the brief minute that he took to wonder about her questioning glance when she mentioned that he had a bluerider weyrmate, perhaps she thought it would bother him. No matter it was of no bother for him, the thought was soon lost among other thoughts.. It sounded as if he would get to train with the Master Tanner. "sounds good to me." he said, his grin widening. It would be good to have a good mentor,a Father figure he could look up to, not have to run for his life from.

"I'll send you a note after I double check everything with everyone and set up a time we can all meet." She stood up and let the boy out of the office. If only every meeting were this easy.
