Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 11, day 22 of Turn 4
The Master of Apprentices drummed his fingers on his worktable as he contemplated what lay ahead of him. He really disliked these types of conversations, but they were a responsibility that came with his rank, and therefore, necessary.
Ednan was more than bit nervous when he entered the master of Apprentice's office. "You wanted to see me, sir?"
Mahantan nodded and pointed to the chair in front of his table. "It's time that we had a talk." "Yes, sir," Ednan said respectively and pulled the chair for him.
"Your instructors are concerned about you," the older dolphineer told him. "Do you have any idea why?" Ednan had a pretty good idea why. "I think so," he replied quietly and pulled his fingers through his copper-red hair in nervous gesture.
Mahantan leaned forward, lacing his fingers together. "I suggest that you tell me about it." "I haven't exactly paid much attention to my studies lately," Ednan said and winced.
"And is there a reason for that?"
"It's personal," Ednan said and clamped up like a seashell.
"If it affects your apprenticeship, it's my business."
"Let's just say it's my love-life and I'm too gentleman to involve anybody else," Ednan said seethingly, showing some temper.
The Master Dolphineer narrowed his eyes, his own anger barely contained. "You're an apprentice. Your craft is your life and everything else is secondary."
"I know," Ednan said with a sigh.
"So what do you intend to do about it?"
"Work harder with my studies," Ednan said and vowed to do just that.
Mahantan nodded. "I'll expect much better reports from your instructors in the future."
"Yes, sir," Ednan said.
The Master relaxed back into his chair. "Aside from that, how do you feel that your studies are going?"
"I'm still bit struggling with deep diving," Ednan said. "Theory isn't problem and I've taken interest in dolphin healing." He was also relaxing.
"Dolphin healing?" Mahantan made a notation in his file. "Are you considering that as your specialty?"
"Yes, sir," Ednan replied.
"Then perhaps we should consider some extra classes to help you decide." The older dolphineer did not like to pile more work on his apprentices, but this one needed less time for distractions.
Ednan suppressed a groan. Just what he need, more work. Well, perhaps it would keep him out of trouble...or not.
"In the meantime," Mahantan continued, "I'll expect you to improve in all of your studies and to stay focused."
"Yes, sir," Ednan said obediently. There wasn't anything else he could say.
The Master studied the apprentice's face for a moment and decided that he had struck sufficient fear into the youngster. "Unless there's anything you need of me, you may go."
"Thank you," Ednan murmured and stood up.
Mahantan pointed a finger to the young man in warning. "I don't want to see you here again because of a complaint." He turned back to the hidework on his desk, signaling that the meeting was over.
