"I expect the Weyrleader will fully recover, ma'am, but it will take some time before he can fly," the Weyrhealer said, his characteristic smile gone from his face.

Traelyn breathed a long, shuddering sigh of relief, slowly sinking back into the chair she had so hastily risen from as soon as Pacham had walked into the room. She could still hear Hasaarth's scream of agony echoing in her mind, and she closed her eyes briefly, trying to push it out of her memory. "Do you know how much time?"

Pacham smoothed down the wiry hairs of his mustache thoughtfully. "It's hard to say. He'll be bedridden for a couple sevendays at least. We'll know more then."

"A couple sevendays," she murmured, rubbing her hand along her forehead. At least it wasn't longer than that! She'd be a lot more anxious if Pacham didn't have any idea of time. But.... Shards. Nyith would be rising soon. Very soon.

"We will do everything we possibly can for him," he assured the goldrider.

Her eyes were tired when they met his. "Is he resting?"

"Yes, yes, he is," Pacham nodded. "They both are. Please, don't worry. If we can get him to rest, and limit his physical movement so as not to aggravate the injuries, both he and his lifemate should make full recoveries within a matter of months."

"Thank you, Pacham. You'll keep me informed, won't you?" She leaned forward a little. "Will I be able to see him in a few candlemarks?"

"Of course you shall." Though how long he would be awake and how talkative he might be was something the Weyrhealer couldn't predict.

She hesitated for a moment, brow furrowed. "Nyith is due to rise soon. By the end of month. At the latest...the beginning of next. Would he...be physically able to take part in it?"

The Weyrhealer ran his fingers through his mustache once more as he carefully considered his reply. Finally he shook his head. "No, Traelyn.
No, I don't see them being recovered in so short a time."

Shards. Lowering her eyes, she nodded, both accepting his word and letting him know he could leave to continue with his work beyond the office door. Once she was left alone, her hands clenched tightly around her riding gloves as she stared at Pacham's bookshelf, eyes unfocused.

So. Hasaarth wouldn't be able to fly. Chance always played the biggest role in a mating flight. Though most queens usually had one bronze they preferred over the rest, they were all the same when she was in heat, rising to the sky to ride the winds and exult in her sexuality. Even if Hasaarth _could_ participate, Nyith may not choose him...though she had been consistent in choosing him in the past. But he wouldn't rise, and now Traelyn was facing the certain reality of having to work with someone new.

Dolphin Cove was going to have a new Weyrleader.

But who? Dolphin Cove was the one Weyr of the south that had the least amount of fighting dragons, not to mention the least amount of bronzes. And Traelyn knew that there were even fewer Dolphin Cove bronzeriders who could competently lead the Weyr.

Unless she called for an open flight.

If she did, there would be plenty of qualified bronzeriders coming from all Weyrs to participate. U'kaiah's face suddenly flashed in her mind's eye, and she blinked, eyes finally focusing as an idea took hold of her.

Yes.... There was at least one ambitious bronzerider who would undoubtedly grasp at the opportunity she offered.
