Runaway Bacon!

Writers: Bree, Paula
Date Posted: 21st October 2005

Characters: Kiyan, Aivorn
Description: Kiyan and Aivorn watch nervously as an escaped boar traipses through Kiyan's vines.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 8, day 10 of Turn 3

"Don't let that sharding boar get into the fields or orchads!" Aivorn bellowed at the top of his mightly lungs to his apprentices and journeymen.
Who were hot on heels of runaway porcine. The boar was notorious escape artist and the pride of the Emerald Falls Holds small porcine herd. The master beastcrafter was too dignified to give it a chase himself. "If it eats any of the journeyman Kiyan's wines, you'll be sharing its pen!"

"Sorry about this, journeyman, I'm sure they'll catch it soon" he turned to the man next to him. Kiyan was watching the entire spectacle with wide eyes and wringing hands.
"I hope so! I must say, Lord Enrizial would _not_ be pleased if the boar decided to eat next harvest's grapes!"

"Me neither. I like my wine like next man" Aivorn said. "HEY! Chase that swine this way!" he shouted instructions. "Last time it escaped, it trapled down a field of grains. The farmers weren't happy, the subject of bacon came up several times after that incident." Kiyan's eyes darkened as the swine weaved dangerously close to one of his vines. "Bacon sounds marvelous right about now," he replied grimly. "How did he get out to begin with?"

"Charged over an apprentice who was bringing his food. The boy wasn't big enough to stop a big boar like him. I've told the journeyman to feed it themselves, but they keep sending the apprentices to do their job" Aivorn told with a dark tone of voice. "The dimglow who sent a 13-turns old to do a mans job will pay for it," his voice held a threath. "The poor lad had to be taken to infirmary." The vintner winced, finding it all too easy to imagine how the boar had run right over a boy. He wasn't a small man, but he could imagine being knocked off his feet all too well. "Will the boy be all right? He wasn't too badly injured was he?"

"I don't know, I haven't talked to the healers" Aivorn replied, hiding his worry under a gruff tone. Kiyan winced as one of the journeymen tripped and went skidding dangerously close to one of the new vines he'd just put down for the winter. "Shards! I had no idea those things could move so fast!"

"Jeah, they're fast. And smart, smarter than it's healthier" Aivorn couldn't help but sound little proud. He had made the porcines flourish in Emerald Falls after all. "Let's just hope your journeymen are at least as smart," Kiyan replied dryly. "Otherwise, Lord Enrizial will be giving us both a piece of his mind!"

"Mmhumh" Aivorn agreed, his attention in the chase. Seemed like the journeymem had been able to drive the runaway towards them. "Stand aside, Kiyan, this might be dangerous" Aivorn warned with a serious voice and placed himself directly on the path of the boar. He planted his feet firmly on the ground and steeled himself. The beast charged directly at him. It was frightening sight, several hundered stones of muscle with tusks and mean, bloodshot little eyes. Kiyan took more than a few steps back as he watched the boar charge, wondering if he would look cowardly if he ran. The fact that he might distract the swine's attention and end up being chased was the only thing that kept his feet planted. At the last moment, before the boar hit him, Aivorn jumped aside with surprising agility. He grab the beasts ear and snout and was almost jerked off his feet. The beast actually dragged him with him before Aivorn got his fingers pinched aroung the tender flesh between nasals. The pain made the boar stop, and squall. "Quickly!" Aivorn called, wrestling with the boar.
The journeymen run to the scene with ropes and in moments the boar had ropes around his neck and the journeymen were dragging the struggling beast back to it's pen. "Wheywh" Aivorn sighed and rotated his shoulder with a grimace.
It hurt. It had felt like the boar was going to pull his arm off socket.

"Your job looks a far bit more dangerous than mine!" Kiyan was watching the journeymen struggle with the swine. "I think I'll stick to plants! They stay where you put them and rarely try to run you over!"

"Aye, at the moment, the plants sound very attractive" Aivorn agreed whole-heartily and massaged his shoulder. "Shall we go to see what damage was done to your wineyard?" "I suppose we should," Kiyan replied grumpily, eyes going to the precious plants he'd spent all autumn cultivating. "And if there's too much damage, I think I'll want that bacon..."
