Aishara

Aishara

When the Fall was over, Aishara patiently waited until some of the healers had time to check her. She let them treat the more severedly injured ones first. After all, she just had very minor brush with the Thread. It had even stopped bleeding on its own. But it was her very first and she was quite nervous too.

"Wingrider? Are you still waiting?" a bushy-lipped healer asked from the door of the nearby examining room.

"Yes, sir," Aishara replied nervously.

"Ah, well then, you'd best come in here," he said waving her into the room.

Aishare limped after him. "I got little bit scored," she said, almost apologetic. The Thread had brushed against her tight, leaving a about palm sized area where the skin had been "eaten" away. The cold of /between/ had killed the Thread before it could damage the tissues deeper.

"Oh dear, you sure did," the Weyrhealer said, bending over to take a better look. "You were lucky, though. Here, can you hop up here on the table?"

"Sure," Aishara replied and climbed to the table. She moved slowly and carefully. Now that adreline had worn off, it was starting to hurt.

Pacham gently ran a finger along riding pants around her score. "I'm afraid your pants are ruined anyway, but I'm doing to need to cut these off of you. Don't worry, we have some spares that you can wear back to your Weyr. It would just be much harder to pull them off of you, and it would do more damage than good."

Aishara just nodded. "They are new," she muttered and shrugged.

"It's a shame to be sure," the Weyrhealer smiled, giving the knee of her uninjured leg a gentle pat. "But this just means you will need another new pair."

"There's that," Aishara admitted with a brave smile.

"Now, why don't you lie back on the table and I will see what I can do about this Threadscore of yours." Pacham ducked his head outside the door and flagged down one of the female apprentices to bring him a fresh bowl of redwort. "Now," he said, turning back towards the greenrider, "why don't you tell me how this happened?"

"I was feeding Auymith more firestone, when I felt it brush against my leg. I didn't see it coming at all. We went /between/ instantly,"
Aishara told him.

"And lucky you did," he smiled as he pulled out a pair of scissors. He nodded to the apprentice as she came through the door to put the redwort on the table. "Don't worry, this seems very minor indeed. You'll be healed up in no time."

"I hope so. It's my first. First time for everything, huh," Aishara said.
She just hoped she wouldn't be grounded because of it.

"I think the only way you'll be grounded for more than a couple days is if infection sets in, and we'll do everything to make sure it doesn't. Now hold still while I cut."

Aishara turned her face away. She had helped her father with injured beasts or with births, but she found the sight of her own blood and skinless flesh nauseating. Last thing she wanted was throw up.

Pacham carefully cut away the pants around her leg. "So where you from the Weyr originally?" he asked, trying to keep her mind off of it all.

"No, I'm from the Emerald Falls hold. But I do have grandmother and other relatives here," Aishara replied.

"Is that how you ended up at the Weyr?" He handed the tattered remains to the apprentice and took the bowl of red wort.

"Yes. I was watching my cousin stand but ended up impressing from the Stands instead," Aishara smiled at the memory.

"Oh yes? That was you?" Pacham asked, rather surprised as he cleaned out her wound. He remembered sitting in the Stands that Hatching. "And you're in a wing already. Time does fly."

"It does," Aishara agreed.

"All right, that looks clean to me," the Weyrhealer smiled as he dipped his hands in the redwort to clean them. "How is the pain? I'd rather not use numbweed on this, but I can give you a mild tea if you'd like."

"It does hurt but it's more like throbbing soreness than pain,"
Aishara tried to descripe the feeling.

"I'll add a mild pain killer to your tea then. And we will also give you a tea that you will need to drink which will help ward off any infections." Infection was actually more dangerous than the wound itself in some cases.

Aishara nodded wordlessly.

"Ah now, no worries greenrider," Pacham reassured her, giving her knee a pat. "You'll be fine in no time. Now I would like you to lie here a while longer before we bandage you up, just to let your wound air a bit.
And I'd recommend wearing skirts for a few days."

Aishara nodded again. "Thank you, master Pacham," she said.

"No need to thank me, no need at all," the Weyrhealer said giving her shoulder a gentle pat. "I just don't want to see you in my infirmary again for a while at least, all right?"

"I'll do my best to stay away," Aishara promised.
