"That went well," said Teseada as she slipped out of her riding jacket after drills. "What do you think?"
"Al_most_ without a hitch," Aryn grunted as she hit the ground, sliding off of her green Viyanth. "Vi finally seems to be doing better, though every now and then out of the blue she still seems to favor that left wing."
"It'll take time for her to get used to it again." Teseada grinned. "Want to grab some Klah?"
"Sure, drills always make me thirsty!"
"And I bet I can talk them out of some of those cheesy things from the kitchen. You know the little pastry things?"
"Mmmm, I love those! Especially when they're fresh, and the cheese is so thick and gooey, it oozes out when you bite into it... " Aryn excitedly tossed her riding harnass on its peg, as her stomach rumbled audibly. "Now you've gone and made me hungry too! Hurry up Tess, let's go now!"
"At last, someone who thinks the same way I do, I bet I can persuade my mother the help us out wit things from the kitchen." And spending some time with a friend was far better than the hidework waiting for her. It had to be.
"It'll be great to catch up - we haven't sat down just to chat in ages!" Aryn slowed her haste as a thought occured to her and turned to her friend. "That is, as long as you have time... I know you always have lots of important things to take care of..."
"The hides can wait a candlemark for once. It's only tithes again, and that's just copying the list they sent us from the holds."
"What're we waiting for, then - let us embark on this noble quest, fearless leader!" Aryn made a grand sweep of her arm with a deep bow -
and then promptly ruined the effect with a giggle, glad to be in the company of her friend.
Teseada giggled too, after all, everyone had to have some fun at some point in the day. "That-a-way!" she said pointing.
"So, what's new with you, girl?" Aryn said breezily as they settled down with their klah and their cheezy golden treasures. "Is that wannabe ladies' man Maton still after you?" she teased.
"I hope not, he's all talk. My Ma would say 'all mouth and no trousers', but I don't want to find out."
Aryn laughed heartily in agreement. "I wouldn't either! Definitely not my type... and not just because he's a friend of my brother's."
"At least he's not Y'nub!" That was heartfelt, the bronzerider had hurt her when she found out that it was all the subject of a bet to bed her.
"Ugh," Aryn snorted, "thank goodness we haven't seen that wherry's arse around in a while! 'Course then you wonder what he and his sick crony D'enek are plotting next. I still can't believe how they treated you! The nerve," she fumed.
"Well at least I'm looking out for myself now."
Looking down into her cup of klah as she swirled it around, Aryn took her friend's example and willed herself to calm down. "Yeah, I guess that's the way to look at it - another lesson learned. But don't forget that you're not alone! Karri and I've always got your back!"
"I know, and I'd do the same for you two, no matter what." Teseada gave her friend a smile. She hadn't ever thought that she would make friends like this. First she'd been the weyrbrat the others liked. Then everyone else had been looking at her because of Onnyth, it had taken time for her to settledown again.
She glanced back up at Teseada, and gave her a crooked grin. "And I hope that 'looking out for yourself' also doesn't exclude 'looking around' for a little eye candy... not everyone's like that tunnelsnake, you know."
Was now the time to say that she quite liked Aryn's brother, wondered Teseada. "I'm sure there are some good ones out there."
Aryn giggled. "I _know_ there are... for example, I had the good fortune to run into U'kaiah while he was swimming at the lake.
Rrrrawrr! He sure is a feast for the eyes; such a nice guy, too. And..."
she lowered her voice conspiratorily, "this is top secret but... I think his friend N'klar's kinda cute too! There's something about tall guys with curls, just does me in."
She took a big bite of the cheese-filled treat. "Mmmmm... ok, your turn!" she mumbled as she chewed. "C'mon, there's gotta be someone you're crushing on!"
Teseada shook her head. "Not at the moment, I need to get out more and see what's out there."
"Hmmm." Aryn shrugged one shoulder. "Well, I sure wouldn't want to rush you or anything... we'll just have to find some time to go people-watching sometime, no pressure, just to enjoy the view. There are plenty of works of art out there, just waiting to be appreciated!"
She smiled broadly, wrinkling her nose - her typical Aryn-clowning-around face.
Teseada laughed. This conversation was just what she needed to relax.
