Characters: J'darin, K'deren
Description: J'darin moves a favorite of his, barely 15 turns, to Cyclone, calling in K'deren to discuss it.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 1 of Turn 4
J'darin looked over the stack of hides on his desk, and frowned slightly. Another weyrling had just turned 15 and that meant he was going to have to assign him to a Wing. It was Cyclone's turn, and that meant he was going to have to talk to K'deren.
He was hoping to get a Wingleader in soon for Cyclone, but at the moment, he had K'deren.
He blinked and read the name again.
I'ster and brown Tynnath.
Oh.. no. .I'ster.
For a moment, he cursed himself roundly in his mind.
}:It is right to fly. He will fly well.:{ Hasaarth sent soothingly, listening to his rider's inner grief as he sometimes did.
**Thank you, beloved. But it is very hard for me to send Hatchlings to fly against Thread. Will you send for Donneth's rider, please?**
While his bronze did not really understand - he watched his hatchlings fly all the time - he did do as he asked, and sent to Donneth.
}:The Weyrleader would see you,:{ Donneth told his rider.
**Tell him I'm coming,** was the reply, as K'deren sighed, signed the last hide in the pile on his desk and got to his feet. ** We'll be there in a moment or two.**
"Come in, K'deren." He called, when the brownrider arrived. "Have a seat. I'll try not to take of too much of your time, as I know you're very busy."
J'darin gathered his thoughts, then passed K'deren the hide he'd been looking at a few moments ago. "I have another eligible Wingrider for you; I'ster rider of brown Tynnath." The hide would list I'ster's record, when he Impressed, where, when he graduated, and most importantly, how old he was. 15 turns.
"We could use another brownrider," began K'deren as he took the hide. His voice trailed off as he realised that the rider had only just reached his fifteenth birthing day. "Isn't he a little young?"
"He is 15 turns. I have not altered that limit, K'deren. We are still very low on fighting strength, though some of those wounded in the storm are starting to return to duty. Besides that, he Impressed young. He's been out of weyrling training for almost 2 turns and his dragon is fully mature, as is he."
"If you are sure that he can cope, then I'll take him." K'deren made a mental note to speak to the lad himself. No matter how mature his dragon, and how ready he seemed to be, if there was any doubt, he'd keep him on light duties and out of the worst of it.
J'darin nodded, hiding the pain he felt. I'ster was a special favorite of his, and he had no wish to send him out to fight Thread.
But the practical side said, yes, I need him to be up there, flaming.
And a brown was a lacking commodity. "I'm sure, K'deren. I watched him train and spent a great deal of time with him when he was younger.
He is ready, and actually, excited." He passed over the hide to K'deren. "I know you'll take good care of him."
"I hope I can live up to that."
"You have so far, K'deren."
And that, gentle readers, is as close to a compliment as that very able brownrider ever heard from his grouncy Weyrleader.
