"Excuse me..." Keirlee took a step forward and waved to Teykara as she walked past. "I'm not sure if you remember me? I'm Rahona's friend."
she brushed back a lock of wavy blonde hair from her eyes, and smiled a little nervously.
"Yes," Teykara said with a nod and a smile. "I remember - but not your name. I think I've caught that from Yeulanth."
"Keirlee, I was, er, am one of Rahona's friends."
"That's the bit I remember - seeing you with her. What can I do for you, Keirlee?"
"I haven't heard from Rahona since the arrived on the paddleboat, I was wondering if you knew how they had all settled in? I know she was worried, and well," she shrugged, trying to look less concerned than she was, "I was a little worried for her. Weyrfolk don't blend in as well out there."
"Oh? Hasn't she written? Well, I do know a bit - have you got time for a klah while I catch you up with things?"
"Yes, definitely. A klah would be good." Keirlee nodded, "And no, I haven't heard, but I expect she's been busy settling in." She tried to play down the lack of contact she had had with Rahona.
"Very busy, from what I understand." Teykara matched pace with the lower caverns woman as they headed to the dining cavern. "And her weyrmate's father just died a few days ago. Buried yesterday, I believe."
Keirlee's footsteps faltered, "Oh," she glanced across at Teykara, "oh, I'm sorry. Though she did say it wasn't unexpected. At least Lineal got to see his father, before..."
"Yes. I think things have worked well, there. Take a seat," Teykara said, nodding at the empty tables. "I'll get a pitcher and some mugs."
"Thanks." Keirlee pulled out a chair and sat, watching as the other woman made short work of collecting a couple of mugs and a pitcher of klah from the hatch. "So," she said, as Teykara returned, "have you visited them since they left?"
"Once. R'harne's wing had extra drills so I said I'd go. They seemed very happy. Oh, and did you know Rahona has a firelizard now?" The greenrider poured two mugs of klah and grinned. "R'harne promised he'd get her an egg ..."
"She has?" Keirlee's face brightened, "So she'll be able to keep in contact?" She sat back for a moment, considering, "Do you think it would make it hard for her, if I wrote?" she asked, not wanting to increase Rahona's homesickness if she was settling in well.
"I don't think so. I suppose she's been too busy to write, herself, or
-" Teykara frowned. "Perhaps she just expected her brothers to let her friends know how she was getting on."
"May be," Keirlee replied, "but I suppose her firelizard isn't quite old enough to be flitting here and there - yet?" she mused, willing to give Rahona any excuse for not writing to her yet.
"Not really. She was hatched ..." Teykara tried to remember the date.
"First day of last month. So, not old enough yet, though she's growing into a fair sized creature." The greenrider grinned, adding the most exciting fact last: "She's a little - or quite a big - gold."
"She Impressed a gold?" Keirlee rocked back in her chair, a wide smile split her face. "Well done Rah!" she exclaimed, clasping her hands together. "And the little one wouldn't be old enough to be trained yet, which is probably why she's not sent word yet." She nodded, almost to herself.
"And I can imagine she's a handful to raise. Shall I ask R'harne or his brother to take you along next time they visit? It wouldn't be any trouble."
"I'd love to go, but.." she sat back considering the offer, then shook her head, "I don't want to impose on Rahona..."
"I don't think it would be anything of the sort. She's just been busy -
a new life and all." Teykara remembered when her life had changed completely when she had caught the attention of the green hatchling; how everything outside their new life together had become irrelevant and it had taken time to find a new balance between the old life and the new.
"Seeing a familiar face will just remind her that she still does have friends here - as well as her family."
"If you're sure?" Keirlee still wasn't entirely convinced that it would be a good idea but she desperately missed Rahona's friendship and the chance to see for herself, that her friend had settled into her new life, was an opportunity not to be missed.
"Absolutely. I'll find out the next time they're going - it's not usually a restday but the day the riverboat stops at their home hold.
If it's a working day then R'harne heads out very early in the morning and is home in time for breakfast. That makes it mid-morning for Rahona, which seems to work." Teykara grinned at the lower caverns woman. "Can you get up really early?"
"I'm a caverns worker, I don't get a 'sleep in', until restday." she laughed, "Let me know when and I'll be ready."
