A letter to her Mother

Writers: Kaysea
Date Posted: 15th July 2007

Characters: Kateena
Description: Kateena writes to inform her birth mother about her impending marriage to Swift.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 4, day 27 of Turn 4

Candlelight flickered across the paper, the room was quiet, and Kateena sat there debating the start of the letter she knew was long overdue to her mother. She chewed roughly across the end of the stylus, while staring into space. The rest of the room glowed warmly with the light of the other three candles spread out around the room.

She bent her head again, and began:

Dear Mother, I know it's only been a few sevendays since I wrote to you last, but this time I have what I hope you will see as good news.

Kateena paused and bit the end of the stylus. The last time she had written to Aneya had been to inform her of her application for a full transfer to the Southern Dolphin Hall. She had had a brief message back from her mother, a few days ago to congratulate her on her new appointment, but what would her mother think when she received this missive, she wondered.

Not only has my transfer been fully approved now, but I am also to be married. I'm sure you will love Swift, almost as much as I do, when you finally meet him.

We haven't set a date as yet, but I would like to extend an invitation to both you and father to attend the small ceremony. I would also like to beg of you, a small favour.

A smile crept across her face as she continued writing, outlining her handfasting gift to her new husband, one that she knew he would love to receive as much as she would love presenting it to him.

I'm must warn you though mother, like you, I too have taken a fancy to an older man. Like father, Swift is a good deal older than myself, which some look on as slightly odd, but I suspect you will understand the attraction when you see him.

She was aware that her mother had had a deep crush on her father, this much had been divulged in passing conversation, but unfortunately, unlike with Swift and herself, her mother and father had only come together by draconic choice. Her mothers dragon Jusuuth, choosing her fathers dragon, Keseyerth, as her mating flight partner to give her Aneya some chance at personal gratification during the flight.

It hadn't had the desired result. Apart from conceiving Kateena, and being determined to keep the resulting child, Aneya had lost her mate to another greenrider, a male.

Aneya had been pragmatic about the outcome, after all she had fallen for a blue rider, what could she expect? Though they had maintained a very close friendship up until the Fall when K'ten had been Scored, the friendship had collapsed shortly after. K'ten becoming severely self-conscious of his facial wounds had barely associated with anyone outside of his own flight wing thereafter.

I want to invite father to the celebration as well, but I'm unsure if it would be wise. I haven't seen him in so long now, I don't know whether he would be prepared to even see us if we made the trip to the Weyr, which is what I wanted your advice on.

I so want both of you to meet Swift, it's taken me so long to find someone I know I will love forever, that I want to share him with you both. I feel sure once father met him, he would feel he too had found another friend he would feel comfortable around.

But I won't press the issue until I have heard from you.

I also wondered, since the ceremony will be down here, if you had heard anything of Fordant, or his whereabouts? Though I rarely saw him as a child, I would still like for him to attend. Being so far from my family, I would like the little I have to attend.

I shall finish now Mother, and await your reply. Please let me know if you will grant the favour I have asked of you, in regard to Swift. I know it's an unusual request, but one I dearly would like to present to him.

Yours in deepest affection, Kateena xox With a sigh of relief that she finally had everything out in the open, she folded and sealed the letter with a splash of wax from the candle, placing her thumb deep into the wax to ensure the letter was sealed tightly. It was a shame Swift's firelizard was still too young to carry messages, but no matter, she knew the courier would be here within the next day or so, and her letter would be winging it's way north within the sevenday.

She smiled to herself again, and hoped fervently that she would be able to keep the favour she had asked of her mother, to herself. It would be so tempting to tell Swift - or even Yara - what she had planned.

Standing, she paced around the room. Nervous energy was wasted at this time of the night when she couldn't go and swim it off. She moved to the doorway and opened the door, peering out into the night. It was mild outside, and the noise from the beach was low which meant no crashing waves.

She wondered if Civi or any of the pod would be close to shore? She wouldn't mind some company, and the dolphins were less voluble than humans, grateful just to have company to swim with, not necessarily to talk to.

She walked back into the room and collected her towel from the back of the chair. A quick swim to wear off this energy she was feeling, and then maybe she could sleep, she decided. With a quick glance at the letter which sat on her desk, and a wide smile on her face, she made her way out of her quarters and down to the beach.
