Description: Talwynn and Teseada catch up with each other and make plans for a
girl's night later.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 2 of Turn 4
Talwynn knocked on Teseada's door. Ever since they'd graduated and
everyone had been put in different wings, it had been harder to find
time to catch up with people, but she liked visiting her friends when
she could. "It's Talwynn. You busy?" she called.
"Not for a friend I'm not," called out Teseada.
"Excellent." Talwynn came in. "How have you and Onnyth been? Enjoying
the Queen's Wing?"
"More than I thought I would," Teseada pointed to a chair as she spoke.
"I miss you guys around though," she added.
Talwynn nodded. None of the other friends had made it into the
Weyrleader's wing with her, so she knew how it was. "I hope you don't
mind if I say I hope I stay out of the Queen's for awhile." she joked,
taking the seat. "What else have you been up to, other than drills?"
"Staying away from that stupid tunnelsnake of a bronzerider. You heard
about
Y'nub, right?"
"I heard you two were happy together- but then, I heard he had something
to do with Karri's accident." Talwynn said. "I guess that's true?"
"Something like that," admitted Teseada. "Her Elliath said that Y'nub had
got her upset and that was why she fell."
"Stupid man. So you're avoiding him because he hurt her?"
"Because she heard him say that he was only with me for a bet," she
corrected the greenrider. "I don't think he ever really liked me for me."
Talwynn winced. "That's terribly unfair." she sympathized. She'd never
been in that situation herself with a man, her very few and only
encounters being casual, but she could imaging how much it would sting to
believe someone valued you for yourself. "I guess now that you're a
goldrider, you'll have to deal with stupid wherries who don't really care.
It sounds like a miserable perk of rank."
"Something nobody ever warned me about."Teseada changed the subject
hastily.
"Hey, Karri, Kamira and I were planning on a girls night - you want to join
us?"
"Definitely. It'll be nice to see everyone in one place again. There
going to be food?"
"I hope so, I wonder if we can persuade the cooks for some of those cheesy
things I like."
"Probably. Definitely, if someone tells them it's for you." Talwynn
laughed slightly. "You can probably ask them for anything and they'll jump
all over to get it."
"I wish," they usually reminded her what other hidework she had to so for
them afterwards. "Then they give me some hidework to get through."
"Sounds fun. They're not giving you the lion's share of the work,
though, are you? That would just be mean." Talwynn didn't have a high
opinion of people who would give the newer goldrider all the work.
"Covera and Kapera seem to have as much to do as well."
"What's your favorite part of being graduated?" Talwynn asked.
The goldrider thought for a moment. "Apart from the no curfews and no
restrictions thing? Just people really looking at me like I mean
something."
"You do, and you always will. And you always did, too." Talwynn said.
"It's nice that people recognize it now. Hey, imagine what reception
you'd get outside of the weyr!" she suddenly said.
"I don't know whether they'd look at me or Onnyth more."
"Probably her. It's not often holders see dragons, and certainly not
gold ones."
"I guess so, holders are a breed of their own though. I think it's
difficult for us weyrborn to understand than sometime."
"It is. I think it also distances us, too." Talwynn said. "I mean, we
spend our lives here in the Weyr, so we have a greater sense of what it's
like to actually fly Thread and risk our lives, and we know how important
dragons are. I mean weyrbred children, not dragonriders, actually. On the
other hand, we don't know what dragonriders fly to protect. We've never
lived in a Hold or Hall. We've never been completely helpless, relying on
that protection. We don't really know what we're flying to preserve."
Suddenly self-conscious, she shrugged. "I'm lucky that some of my family
are Hall crafters, so I've seen a bit of it. Still, we have a better
upbringing."
"I guess so, and I nearly found out. If I'd not impressed, well I wanted to
leave the weyr and go to the hall to work on walking the tables."
"We don't have time to craft anymore." Talwynn sighed, remembering how
much she'd loved stargazing and how much she missed doing it. "Still, at
least you could have gone to the Hall here. More than some women get."
"I know, but Onnyth had other plans for me."
"I'm glad she did. This is a much better life."
"Definitely." There was heartfelt agreement in Teseada's voice.
"So a girl's night, huh?" Talwynn asked. "Have Onnyth tell Riveth when,
and I'll be there."
"She will, I think she'll enjoy it as much as we do."
"I bet. Riveth always enjoys when I'm being social. I think dragons enjoy
seeing lifemates having fun."
"And if it makes them happy, then it has to be good."
"Definitely."
"We'll be in touch, but it'll be soon. As soon as we can all get our duties
sorted, then I'll plan it."
"Fantastic." Talwynn said. "I'll see you then."
