Description: J'kyran and S'bryn play a game of chess...with an interesting outcome
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 7 of Turn 3
S'bryn pulled his flight jacket on, buttoning it tight against the cold outside. Why he'd fallen in love with a place that had such bitter weather, he still hadn't figured out. It was just his luck that it was J'kyran's turn to host their little chess tournament, dragging him into the cold. Thankfully, Zaharath was going to give him a lift up to the younger man's weyr.
Going out to the ledge, he winced and vaulted himself up onto the bronze. **Let's go, before I freeze!**

J'kyran tapped his fingers impatiently on the chessboard--S'bryn was late. Again. The greenrider fiddled with some of the pieces on the board, playing a quick game with himself to keep boredom from killing him. Karynth sighed, covering her eyes with a foreclaw.
}: Will you cut that out, please? It's irritating. :{ "Yes, mother," J'kyran replied, chuckling softly. "I just look forwards to these games, that's all."
The green fixed him with a gently whirling eye, her mental 'tone' becoming rather dry. }: Yes. You do, don't you? :{ Her rider gave her an odd look, his fingers stopping their brief dance over the chessboard. "What's that supposed to mean?"
}: Oh, nothing, nothing...:{ J'kyran got the distinct impression that the dragon was trying not to laugh at him. }: Oh, and Zaharath says they're on the way. :{ "Good! Finally..." he muttered, as he quickly reset the pieces of the chessboard into their proper slots--a little bit distracted, perhaps.
Karynth was _very_ odd sometimes.
S'bryn slid off Zaharath's neck onto the ledge with a grin at the bronze. "You going to stay here and keep Karynth company, or go back down to our place?"
}:Oh, I think I'll stay here for awhile.:{ The rider barely noticed the dragon's smirking tone, just shrugging and heading inside. "It's your hide that'll freeze, not mine, buddy. Have fun with the lady." He nodded a distracted greeting to the green and called out, "J'kyran?
You in here, buddy?"
"No, I'm not," J'kyran replied, his tone very dry. "I've been transported to a land full of midget watch-whers, just about three feet tall, each, and they've crowned me king. So I sit on my special throne and rule over them all, and they feed me sweets and very good klah."
}: You were? :{ Karynth asked, her head swinging around, and staring at her rider. }: But you're sitting right here. :{ The greenrider smacked his forehead with a palm. "And, my dear, devoted dragon here, doesn't understand the concept of sarcasm.
Anyway..." He gestured to the seat across from him. "C'mon, get warm--I do have klah, though it's not nearly as good as the stuff made by the midget whers."
S'bryn snorted. "You... are one _strange_ individual. It makes me wonder about my sanity, even coming up here to spend time with you.
What if it rubs off?" As he spoke, he stripped off the jacket and scarf twined around his neck.
J'kyran laughed. "Yeah, but I'm the only person around who will play you at chess, and give you a run for your marks, so to speak," he said. "That, and you don't want to admit the superiority of my tactical mind."
}: Oh, please, someone poke him with a pin before his head begins to swell. :{ Karynth said, to noone in particular, snorting quietly. }:
Make sure your rider beats him, Zaharath, or he'll become impossible to live with. :{ "Quiet you," J'kyran replied, rolling his eyes.
S'bryn guffawed as Zaharath relayed this last message. Tilting back so he could see out to where the dragons were curled together, he called to Karynth. "Don't worry, he got a few marks too many out of me last time. I have _every_ intention of taking him down!" The bronzerider didn't even think about the other ways his comment could be taken as he turned back to the other man. "I think you like it when I beat you, sometimes."
J'kyran's eyes widened at the bronzerider's comments, his face flushing--then he realized what the man really meant, too late to stifle his reaction. He ducked his head quickly, paying suddenly close attention to the pieces on the board...trying hard not to let himself visualize what he'd _thought_ S'bryn meant.
"I, um...I, I think I like it better when I win, thank you very much..." the greenrider cleared his throat, wishing his mouth wasn't so dry, all of a sudden. "Er, since you started last time, I believe it's my turn. To start. That is." The rider pushed forward a pawn, then mentally cursed--he hadn't meant to make that particular move.
Nonplussed by the other rider's nervousness, a dark eyebrow quirked upward when he moved the pawn. What was J'kyran doing? S'bryn thought.
That wasn't one of his usual opening moves. His eyes narrowed, the bronzerider forced himself not to grin. If Ky was distracted, let's see how quickly he could end this game. He shifted his king's pawn forward a space.
