A Matter of Record

Writers: Jane
Date Posted: 17th May 2007

Characters: Lineal, Rahona
Description: Weyrmates Lineal and Rahona prepare to marry.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 8 of Turn 4

"It's just a matter of record, really," Lineal insisted as he straightened his best tunic and peered down the polished toes of his boots. The poor leather was probably still stunned by being cleaned, let alone polished and buffed to – well, not quite to a shine, but a gleam, at least. "Not this important."

"Don't you tell me 'not important'," Rahona growled. "You've done quite enough by springing this on me. Married!" She waved her arms in incoherent protest. "Like holder folk." Had he not surprised her with the idea that they get married before they went off to live on the riverboat she might have accepted it better, might even have told him that people _did_ marry in the Weyr, too, it was just dragonriders who were obliged not to and because of that most weyrbred went the same way.

Lineal grinned and caught her around the waist, stilling her arms and hugging her tightly until he could drop a kiss on unresisting lips.
"It's – not – that – bad. Just a few promises and a harper as witness."

"And this will make our life easier on the riverboat?" Rahona asked, needing the reassurance about more than just getting married.

"Hmm. Not so much on the riverboat; they're pretty flexible about family. It's the people we deal with. Knowing you're from the Weyr they'll have all sorts of odd ideas and being married – their style - to the father of your children will give them little or nothing to complain about."

"Ohhhh, I just know I'm going to get this wrong. Say the wrong thing.
Embarrass you and the whole boat. Offend hold folk."

Lineal loosened his arms, pulling her closer against him and rubbing his cheek against hers. "You won't. Rahona, you're such a wonderful person. You never knowingly offend anybody. You're careful and cautious – Look how long it took you to trust me!"

"You were too good looking to be true."

"And ten Turns later?"

"Just as vain?" she suggested. She sighed, putting her arms around his neck and laying her cheek against his chest. "I know I'm cautious and what if your family think I'm stand-offish because of it?"

"What if, what if? What if they love you as much as I do? What if you settle down on the Sungazer and become the best Captain's wife that's ever sailed on her?"

"Captain's wife?" Rahona repeated, lifting her head to meet her weyrmate's guileless brown eyes. "There's a _title_ for being your wife?"

"Naturally. Social obligations only. You won't be responsible for anything, not like the headwoman."

"Social obligations! Lineal! How could you _not_ mention this?"

"Because I know you'll be fine with them." He ducked the half-hearted punch that headed his way and laughed. "Really. Trust my judgement on this, please."

"I doubt I'll ever trust you again," she wailed. "First marriage and now social obligations!"

"Ah – audience."

Rahona spun around and eyed the children in the doorway. "I'm not really angry with your father," she said immediately.

"You never are," Nalin said with absolute confidence. "You love him."

"And you're getting married," Lihona said. "If you're not late."

"Oh help! We will be." Rahona put a hand to her hair to check that cuddling Lineal hadn't done any damage. "Come on, you two."

"And me, too?" the seacrafter asked with a wink for his son.

"Yes, Lineal, you too."
