Seeing Dolphins

Writers: Jane, Patrick
Date Posted: 21st March 2007

Characters: Ayona, Kouna
Description: Ayona meets the Dolphin Hall Hallsecond, Kouna, and watches the dolphins with her.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 3, day 9 of Turn 4

The master mason paused on the wharf to watch the young woman with the dolphin and couldn't help by smile at the sight. Dragons and their riders had become familiar over the Turns since she had been employed to repair the Weyrs as the draconic population grew, but dolphins and their partners were still a novelty. Since the Dolphin Hall's arrival just along the coast from the Weyr she had taken more than one opportunity to walk down and watch the sea creatures but this time she had business in the former SeaHold itself.

Business that would wait a few moments, though.

Kouna finished talking with a journeymen and stood slowly, her back cracking from being hunched over for more than a few minutes. She turned her neck about to work out the kinks and noticed the older woman standing on the wharf just watching. Kouna walked up behind her and tapped her on the shoulder.

"May I help you ma'am? I'm Hallsecond Kouna."

"Ayona," the older woman said, with a nod toward the Weyr. "From along there. I just stopped to watch your friends." She couldn't help her eyes being drawn back to the creatures frolicking in the bay. "Are they having as much fun as it seems?"

"Always. They adore us humans thinking up new "games" for them." She grinned at the antics of her charges. "Is there anything I can help you with?" She asked the older woman. This woman looked like the kind who wouldn't just appear at the Dolphin Hall without a reason.

"I'm going to visit your masoncrafters here," Ayona explained. "They apparently want a second opinion on something. I stopped to watch the dolphins. Something I'm sure a lot of people find themselves doing."

She was a crafter like herself, Of course, someone with that much pride and power in her face _had_ to be a crafter, most likely a master seeing as the masons were looking for _her_ opinion. "Sometimes. Most of us stop to watch the dragons." She grinned at the taller woman. "It's a commodity I know _I'll_ never get tired of.

"Dragons?"

Kouna sighed. "Yeah. I never saw many of them up North. Even though they're everywhere. I just, never lived close to one." Her eyes lit up just then as a green dragon lifted herself above the rim of the weyr and into her line of sight.

"And now you live right next door to hundreds," Ayona said in understanding. "It's only since the Hall moved in that I've had the chance to see dolphins."

"You've never just went out into the ocean and met them for no apparent reason?" Kouna shook her head in disbelief. "I used to all the time."

"I didn't grow up anywhere people swam," Ayona admitted. "I can manage well enough not to drown, now, but it's not the pleasure paddling in the shallows is."

"I suppose to each their own. I love the water." Kouna grinned as she saw another dolphin join in the water acrobatics. They stood there for a while watching the dolphins and the dragons. Kouna shook her head and looked at the older woman. "If you need directions, I can lead you to the miners cots?"

"No thank you. I know where I'm going. It's been a pleasure to meet you Master Kouna."

"Same to you." Kouna held out her hand for the older woman to shake. "I hope to see you around more often. "Maybe I can introduce you to some of the pod sometime?"

"Perhaps," Ayona said non-committally. She wasn't sure she was ready to go deep enough in the water to meet the creatures in their own environment, no matter how entertaining they looked.

"Well it was nice to meet you." Kouna smiled happily.
