"NO!" Kouna sat bolt upright in bed, her light covering sliding to the floor from her troubled sleep.
'Shards," she whispered to herself as she wiped the cold sweat off her forehead. Coming here was supposed to stop all this. She had dreamt of Kib again, and fighting her nurses into the water, to hold the large female as her eyes closed for the last time. Tears rolled down Kouna's cheeks as that thought resurfaced again. Via awoke and crooned from her place on Kouna's pillow.
Kouna smiled weakly at the queen flit, and scooped her into her arms. Via crooned as she rubbed Kouna's wet cheek. "I need some air." Kouna announced to herself, and grabbed a light jacket to protect from the nightly chill and, with Via providing a silent escort, left her apartments for the serenity of the night.
She walked alone along the beach, watching Via's silhouette against the large moon. She hugged herself, just listening to the sigh of the waves, the wind in the trees, and the call of night avians. It was so peaceful. She looked out to see Via catch a wave with her claws, splashing the moon's echo on the wave. So poetic. Kouna was surprised to see a shadow much larger than the small Via blot the moon. A green dragon settled herself to the sands. And Kouna's younger sister jumped from its neck.
"Kanoma!" Kouna called jumping from the ground to embrace her youngest sister, who was at least a full head taller than her. The younger woman grinned at her older sister.
"Its so great to see you. I remembered halfway through /between/ that my late afternoon was your midnight." She shook her head sadly. "I was lucky that Jeidith noticed you down here."
"Lucky you were indeed." Kouna grinned at her younger sibling. This was just what she needed. She watched as Via examined the much larger Jeidith and grinned. "I have a surprise for you."
"Really, what's the occasion?" Kanoma fell instep with her older yet smaller sister, enjoying the balmy Southern night.
"Its actually a late birthday gift." Kouna said sheepishly.
"But you already sent me that at Turns End." Kanoma said, slightly confused.
"No that was a Turn's End gift, not a birthday gift. Come with me." She led her younger sister back to the hall. She gave Kanoma a very quiet tour, asking about mum and da, her other siblings and her old friends. When they finally got to Kouna's office, both were tired from the long walk back and the extensive, if quiet, tour.
Kouna went to her hearth and rummaged around near it. She came back with a large clay pot. "This is for you." She handed the warm pot to her sister.
"What is it?" Kanoma asked, looking the pot over.
"I recently learned that Via isn't the only gold in this Hall." Kouna began.
"Are you serious? This is a fire lizard egg for me?" Kanoma put the pot down gently before jumping to embrace her older sister. "This is the best gift anyone has ever given me. Thank you sis, thank you!" Kouna grinned as she hugged her youngest sibling back.
"You're very welcome Kanoma. It was no problem." Kouna grinned at her sister's enthusiasm. This was why she moved, for moments like this. This was why she wanted the job of Hallsecond, why she had needed the job; to remind herself why she had lived that fateful day at sea. Kib would be proud.
