They were in the same Wing, so waiting until he was out on Drill and she was not was- well, impossible. So Harki had to think of another time to sneak into V'kelo's weyr to steal the heinous pants. She schemed. She plotted. She even deliberated during Threadfall and nearly got scorched in the process.
V'kelo had taken to wearing the sharding things almost constantly, and Harki knew that it was a deliberate attempt to irritate her. And it _did_. The stupid man had no right to wear something so blatantly offensive! It was like he was constantly punching her in the face with ugliness, and although agrivating, was hardly a problem she could bring to the Weyrleaders' attention.
She wasn't strong enough to ambush him in the hall and physically rip the offending garment from his limbs. She wasn't going to sleep with him - no, that would be giving in. Even if he was rather good looking... **Sharding green eyes...** Harki thought, finding herself getting distracted again. No, she was _not_ going to exchange sex for bad pants.
What she wanted to do was to send Sarian into the bathing cavern after him, distract him with her feminine wiles, and then steal the pants while they were canoodling in the hot tub. Unfortunately, Sarian wanted to get paid for this endeavor since she'd already slept with V'kelo... and, Harki suspected, because she wanted to annoy her. So that was out.
Which was how Harki found herself awake at three candlemarks past midnight with drills starting a mere four candlemarks later, dressed in black and hiding behind V'kelo's couch. His weyr had a rather open plan, for which she was grateful, but because it was locked away inside the rock it was as black as the inside of a dragon's belly.
Her heart beat so loud that she thought she'd wake up the brownrider.
Nobody would wear those pants while they slept. They'd be too uncomfortable. Therefore, the pants had to be somewhere in his weyr.
Harki waited a few moments, listening to V'kelo breathe. Deep and regular - she was sure he was asleep. She bit her lip and told herself that a sleeping man wasn't going to see a greenrider creeping about in the dark, **So get on with it!**
Carefully she extended a leg from behind the couch, then transferred her weight onto it and crept out into the shadowy 'open'. She'd only been in V'kelo's weyr once before, when she'd tried to be reasonable and exchange the pants for a pair from the store room, and hadn't thought far enough ahead to memorize the layout. V'kelo snoozed on as she crept closer to the bed. Hopefully he'd be messy and the pants would be on the floor...
...something brushed her outstretched hand and Harki bit back a yelp.
Nothing moved. V'kelo slept on. She put her hand out again and her palm was tickled by a fur collar - probably a jacket of some sort.
Beside it lay a bit of crumpled fabric - a tunic, by the feel of the laces. She threw it aside. What else.. there was a soft shoe, which she tossed, and a book, which she set aside gently - although she did make sure to close it so that he lost his page. And finally, a rough-woven pair of trousers were found by questing fingertips. It was them! The heinous pants! Harki grinned, gathered them up, stood, and turned to leave. And promptly cracked her shin on something. She yelped and dropped the pants, then cursed again as she realized that V'kelo was awake.
His voice was rough with sleep but sounded very amused. "Take a wrong turn somewhere?"
Shards! Caught. Harki scowled in the dark and bent to find the pants she'd dropped, glad that she couldn't see her hands shaking. "No. I'm exactly where I need to be. Go back to sleep. You're dreaming."
V'kelo chuckled. "No, I _was_ dreaming. And it was a very nice dream.
A dream where women were more interested in me than my pants."
Harki snorted. "Keep dreaming. And go to sleep. I was never here."
The sound of the bedfurs rustling was followed by V'kelo's hand knocking into her arm and then sliding down to grab her wrist.
"Please tell me you didn't break into my weyr in the middle of the night in the _dark_ to steal a pair of pants, Harki."
She kept silent. She wouldn't tell him a thing!
He sighed and then gave a sudden tug on her wrist to pull her towards him. Unfortunately, the darkness caused him to misjudge the distance and instead of tugging her closer, he nearly pulled her off her feet and her body collided with his chest hard enough to make him grunt. This was a little _too_ close. Her heart was pounding like a drum keeping time for a jig. Harki stepped back, planted her feet, and wrenched her wrist away from V'kelo but was unable to break his grip.
"Let me go, wherry-breath!"
His other hand came up to grab the pants. "You first, darling. I'm not letting you escape here with those pants."
"Don't call me darling," she snapped, tightening her grip on the pants. "And I'm doing you a _favour_! Why can't you be graceful about it?!"
"You're committing pre-meditated theft in the middle of the night," he corrected her, tugging on the pants. "You really don't think you're going to get out of here with them, do you? I'm a lot bigger than you are."
Fear frissioned through her body and made her bones tingle. Her eyes went wide in the dark. She let go of the pants and took another step away from the brownrider, even though he still held her by her wrist.
This was a _bad_ idea. "Whatever."
His grip on her wrist gentled a little, though he didn't let go. "You know, you could still get them if you wanted... all it would take is one little kiss..." She shook her head, forgetting that he couldn't see her. "No thanks.
I have better things to do."
V'kelo chuckled, his voice low and intimate in the dark. "Really? It doesn't seem like it."
"Yeah, well. Appearances are deceiving." Now... to make a quick getaway. Harki paused, stumped for a good reason to flee. "I... um, need to go now."
He chuckled again and released her wrist, now that his pants were safe. "I'm sure you do, darling. Don't trip on your way out."
Face burning, Harki turned on her heel and strode out as best she could in the dark weyr. V'kelo's laughter followed her out, and she debated the merits of personal dignity versus unsightly Weyr clothing.
At the moment, her quest seemed petty, stupid, and impossible. **Let it go,** her mind whispered, **take the easy way out and let it go.**
She hoped that things would look brighter in the morning.
