That Too

Writers: Jane

Characters: R'harne
Description: T'kanu complains to R'harne about his daughters' behaviour.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 3, day 4 of Turn 4

The two men – the two brownriders – sat at the table. Both were leaning back in their chairs with feet stretched out well under the table. Both were nursing mugs of ale.

Both were slim men of medium height. Both had dark hair and light eyes.
Both were known for their even tempers.

Both were watching a group of young women at another table but the older brownrider was shaking his head and the younger was grinning.

"There's something wrong with them," T'kanu said, taking a long sip from his mug before glancing at his companion. "You don't think so?"

"Well – not with Teykara, anyway. Not with any of them. All wonderful girls."

T'kanu grumbled inarticulately under his breath. "Of course you'd think they were all right. They're over there _giggling_ about you. Giggling!"

"Oh, I don't know." R'harne's pale green eyes fastened on one of the women and his grin widened. "Teykara just looks ... smug."

The older brownrider rolled his eyes. "I don't know what they see in you."

"You wouldn't, would you?"

They had been friends for Turns; neither of them with a craft, both used to turning their hand to a variety of jobs around the Weyr; brownriders separated by not much more than a decade in age. Then Teykara had decided on R'harne as a weyrmate.

Or perhaps not even that. She had certainly wanted a relationship but the younger man couldn't remember her ever hinting at formalising it.

She had been Turns younger. Decades younger.

But determined. And he couldn't complain. Things had worked out well.
They had been weyrmates for nearly nine Turns and were both ridiculously happy with the arrangement.

Across at the other table Lhara said something that made them all laugh again, with not so subtle glances in his direction.

"Every one of my daughters thinks she's in love with you," T'kanu complained, reaching for the pitcher of ale on the table and refilling his mug.

R'harne nodded silently.

"Which wouldn't be so bad if it didn't make them giggle."

The younger brownrider nodded again and held his mug out for a refill.
"Yeah, the giggling is a problem. Perhaps you should go and tell them to stop?"

T'kanu smiled as he filled his friend's mud and set the pitcher back on the table. "I've tried."

"Oh?"

"They won't stop giggling, and they won't stop thinking you're the best catch in the Weyr."

R'harne considered that for a moment. "Not a bad trade-off, from my point of view." He liked Teykara's sisters, each and every one of them.
They were all individuals despite their similarities in looks, and a whole lot more enjoyable companions than many of the women around the Weyr. More enjoyable in a way that wasn't a threat to his weyrmating.
As much as they made a fuss over him and teased him and Teykara about him being their ideal man, it was all in good fun. They liked him all right, but they wouldn't ever be tempted to misbehave – and they didn't try to tempt him to, either.

"It makes me think they're mentally deficient."

"The giggling?" R'harne suggested drily.

"That too."
