Jielta smoothed an imaginary wrinkle from her dress as she waited outside the doors of her father's quarters for him to answer her knock. This was the first meal held in his new suite. It was small, with only a few guests, but the young woman was still nervous.
Fielton opened the door and smiled at his daughter. "Jielta, you look lovely. And you're just in time to finish setting the table while I choose some wine. Benaroy and Royani should be here soon."
"I'm so glad that were having the meal here in your apartments," she told her father, as she set place settings on the table. "Its like a sign that everything is officially back to normal!"
Feeling much the same way, Fielton selected one of his finer bottles and brought it to the table just as a soft knock sounded at the door. An apprentice followed shortly, looking nervous about escorting such an important guest. "Hallmaster, the Lord Holder and Lady Royani are here!"
Fielton gave the boy a stern look. "Then show them in, lad. And do it politely!"
The apprentice scurried back to where Royani and Benaroy were just outside in the hallway, and made a bow so deep he almost bent in half. "Master Fielton would like you to come in, my Lord!" he squeaked out in a nervous voice that broke on the last word.
Next to her father, Royani did her best to hide a giggle at the boy's wide-eyed awe and kept her hand tucked through her father's arm.
Jielta came forward with a smile. "Good evening Lord Benaroy and Royani.
My father and I are very glad you could meet with us for dinner."
Royani smiled and reached out to clasp Jielta's hand. "Thank you so much for inviting us!" Turning, she gave Fielton a perfect curtsey.
"Hallmaster."
Fielton smiled and bowed slightly in return. "My lady. Why don't you ladies go inside and I'll follow with your father."
"Good evening, Fielton," the Lord Holder smiled as he reached out a hand in greeting to the Hallmaster. "Royani and I were honored by your invitation. How are you settling in here?"
The Hallmaster waited for the girls to enter the room before he accepted Benaroy's hand. "Well, I think. The building is truly a marvel, Benaroy."
The Lord Holder shrugged a shoulder humbly. "My family cannot take credit in the least. It was the technicians who built this Hall. I am just happy to see it put to such good use."
Closing the door, Fielton led Benaroy to the table that had been set up with their meal. "I've sent my acceptance and my thanks to Lady Miralani for her kind invitation. Perhaps we can discuss the details with the girls over dinner."
"Yes, I would like to discuss that." The Lord Holder turned to the Hallmaster's daughter. "Your table looks lovely. Did you cook this meal, Jielta?"
"Just the dessert we'll be having later," Jielta confessed. "We wanted something very special for tonight, and of course the older, more experienced cooks far surpass me in cooking skill. I prefer baking, and I'm more talented at that."
"Choosing the perfect meal and presenting it in such an appealing fashion is a talent unto itself," the Lord Holder smiled as he pulled back the chair for his daughter.
Royani took her seat and smiled at her father. "It looks beautiful, Jielta," she agreed. "And I can't wait to see what you've baked! I've never been very good at that, myself."
"Thank you," Jielta said with a smile, as she took her own seat.
"Selecting what foods to serve together and what to drink with it, and artfully displaying it on a table has always been something I loved to do. Its good to know that it is appreciated."
"I was so happy to hear that you were invited to the Smith Hallmaster's wedding, Jielta. Are you looking forward to it?" Benaroy asked as he took his own seat.
"I'm excited, but a bit nervous too. I've never been there and don't really know anyone there, so its a bit scary!"
Royani smiled. "You'll know your sister, though! I'm sure she'll be able to show us around!"
"Yes, I'm sure she will," Jielta agreed.
Fielton poured a generous glass of wine for himself and Benaroy, and then a smaller amount for Jielta and Royani. "Then let's toast the exciting adventure you young ladies are about to go on."
Jielta raised her glass, and said "Cheers."
