"Io? You awake?" B'lamick whispered towards where his friend lay. "Muuuugh? Foroth?" I'poro's head jumped up from the pillow, his hair mussed and his eyes still closed. His first instinct was to reach his mind out to his dragonet, who was sleeping soundly. Only after that did he turn to B'lamick. "Wha? It's still dark out."
He gave a reflexive look out the window and turned back, "It's still late. I couldn't sleep. Wanna go for a walk?" "Yeah sure." I'poro glanced quickly at the slumbering Foroth, whose slight snores had gone from little whuffle sounds to a high whistle as a small bubble formed on the end of his nostril. I'poro smiled and let his hand trail lovingly along the tiny blue's neck. He threw on a shirt over his bare chest to keep off the slight chill. Then turned to B'lamick. "Ready."
B'lamick started them down the corridor towards the bathing pools, that way if they were caught there was the slightest chance of an excuse saving them. They walked in silence and when they reached the pools B'lamick ducked his head inside. When he didn't see anyone, he went in and sat down on a bench and watched as I'opro followed. "So... did you know?"
"Know what?" I'poro thought he knew, but he wanted to hear B'lamick say it. Wanted to know he was okay with it. He sat down on the bench with him.
"About... you know... that you might impress blue?" B'lamick finally got out. It was not the sort of discussion he thought he would ever be having with Io.
They were supposed to impress bronze together; well at least _brown_!
I'poro smiled a bit. It was a start. "Well... yeah. Before you showed up I met this greenrider, and we got... well we got _pretty_ intimate." I'poro blushed. "And remember that time I _accidentally_ said I liked guys, and walked off in a huff?" I'poro was staring at his feet, his face a deep crimson. "I wasn't lying." His eyes scrunched in preparation for the explosion.
The bronze weyrling was shocked. When I'poro impressed blue, he had just assumed it was a surprise to him. That he had probably had a few thoughts here and there, but for the most part had no clue. That had been easier for B'lamick to accept, he couldn't blame him for something he didn't know. But now, Io, his best friend, was telling him that he had known... and that he had hid it from him the whole time he was at the Weyr. "Yes you were lying." he said a bit too loudly before dropping his volume so people wouldn't be drawn into the room. "You lied to _me_. Why did you do that Io?
All that time we were here at the Weyr together, all those conversations about how we were going to impress bronze or brown and fly side by side in Fall together! Didn't you ever think it might be a good idea to give me a little heads up?" "_This_ is why I didn't tell you!" I'poro didn't try to keep his voice down. He knew he should feel ashamed he'd lied to his best friend, but all he felt was anger. "I _knew_ you'd get all angry at me for keeping it a secret. When I got here I knew about as much as you did. But then I met F'rain, and he...
things just got confusing! And I didn't think you'd ever get here so I didn't worry. Then you were here and I couldn't exactly come out and say it, _you_
never gave me half a chance!" I'poro couldn't remember standing, but he continued on as if that had been his plan all along.
"Every time I tried to sneak it in, you shot it down! You'd always say 'Stop being negative,' or 'don't think like that.' And I'd stop just so you'd stop trying to deny it to yourself. That your best friend might ride blue!" I'poro ignored the shushing motions his friend made and stood there staring, his chest heaving in his fury.
B'lamick didn't like how this was turning on _him_. He hadn't been the one who lied, but inside he was starting to feel bad. Maybe he _had_ made himself inaccessible to talk to... but then, he'd never imagined Io would ever need to talk to him about something like this. "First off, quiet down, or we're going to get caught out here. Second, calm down, or you'll wake up Foroth. Third... maybe I _was_ pushing the bronze idea a bit much; but you still should have told me. I'm not your best friend for nothing you know. It kind of weirds me out, but I've handled it pretty well over the last couple sevendays." I'poro took in deep breaths, the thought of waking Foroth acting as good as any calming tool. After a moment he was able to sit down. They both sat in silence for a while, I'poro staring at his hands. "I'm sorry I snapped. I didn't know how you'd take it. And... I was scared you'd... stop being my friend." I'poro didn't look at his best friend, scared to see the rejection in his eyes, he'd seen in so many others.
The bronze weyrling smiled and playfully shoved him with his shoulder. "We're best friends forever, remember? As good as brothers!" "You have no idea how glad I am to hear that buddy." I'poro put a reassuring hand on his friends shoulder. "And I _promise_ to never flirt with you. Unless you want me too?" I'poro's eyebrow raised in a questioning arch.
B'lamick rolled his eyes and playfully shoved his friend away, "Get off now! No teasing like that until I get used to the idea, okay?"
I'poro blew an erring strand of hair out of his face and rolled his eyes. "Fine than, ruin my fun." The boy chuckled and pushed his friend back.
