Hungry Hatchlings and Leather Gloves

Writers: April, Patrick
Date Posted: 21st February 2007

Characters: Esylian, I'poro
Description: Esylian helps I'poro out with Foroth.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 9 of Turn 4

Esylian was checking on the weyrlings as they were cutting meat for their little charges. She stopped as she watched a young man drop his knife and scrambled to pick it up. "Here this may help." She handed him her knife along with a strange leather glove. "It helps hold it so that the blood doesn't make you loose your grip."

I'poro looked at the knife and glove for a moment, before wiping his bloody hands on his pants leg and slipping it in the glove. "Thanks. Do they always eat this much?"

"For the first month they do. Then they will start to eat a bit less. By the third month he will eat only once a day. But, now they need all of it. This is when they grow the most." She smiled. I'por grinned as he chopped another hunk and tossed it at the hungry Foroth. "I always paid attention in class when they said things like that, well okay not _always_ but more than most. But I never thought that it would apply to _me_." I'poro's eyes never left the meat and the sharp knife near his hands. "Am I the only one who felt that?"

"No, Many have felt that way. I've seen candidates that believed they were there by mistake. That they would never impress. When they do they can't help but believe in themselves again. Then there are those that impress from the stands not knowing that they were going to. But, I promise you one thing. When it comes down to it you will never have to go through anything alone." She smiled. "He is quite the handsome fellow."

Foroth seemed to have heard the comment and spread his wings and stood tall in what he thought to be a handsome pose. The only flaw was his mouth was still open for food. I'poro laughed.

"He is, and I wouldn't trade him for the world." He beamed at his fellow rider as he chucked another meat chunk into Foroth's maw.

Esylian smiled as she walked around him pretending to inspect him. "You've done very well with him. I don't see any rough spots or flaking. HE eats well. Have you any other questions? Things you wonder about?"

"Just the usual stuff, Flights, Blooding. Its seems so close now that he's real and not just a dream in my head." Foroth yawned big after the next bite.

}:I'm tired.:{ He proclaimed to his rider. I'poro smiled.

"Then why don't we get you away from all this meat and over next to the lake so you can sleep and bask at the same time." Foroth nodded and began to waddle slowly toward the lake.

Esylian smiled as he waddled off. "If you ever need someone to talk to or have any further questions just find me or have Foroth bespeak my green. You can keep the glove. I haven't needed it in a long time."

"Thanks and I'll remember if I need help." I'poro stuffed the glove in his pocket and jogged to catch up with his dragon.
