Plans

Writers: Eimi, Paula
Date Posted: 19th November 2006

Characters: E'naer, U'kaiah, T'mahl
Description: E'naer, U'kaiah and T'mahl make plans for the weyrling graduation.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 5 of Turn 4
Notes: Notes: Graduation Control-post.
Notes2: When it comes to the fact that your weyrlings graduate month late, well you can adress the complains to the absent Weyrlingmaster :)

The Weyrlingmaster Second waited until everyone was seated. "All right, gentlemen. We need to plan the graduation. Do you have the list of who are graduating, E'naer?" he started the planning session.

"Here it is," E'naer grinned and dealt everyone a copy.

"T'mahl, where is the Weyrlingmaster?" U'kaiah asked with an annoyed grimace.

"Where do you think? Sleeping it off." T'mahl looked over the hide.
"Well, I suppose we all know which wing Teseada and Onnyth go in. I guess that makes our job that much easier."

U'kaiah snorted at the 'Seconds dry sense of humor. They would be there all day trying to divide all the weyrlings into wings. The bronzerider already had a list of names in mind for who he wanted to try to get into Cyan.

"Then we have the bronzeriders. C'rus is too young, he should stay in Weyrling Wing," E'naer suggested. He was also working as scribe, making notes of the meeting.

"Yes," T'mahl nodded. "Yes we have a few of those. We can automatically assume all those who are too young are going to work with the weyrlings." He didn't like to waste time so he moved them right along.
"Are there any who are just not ready move into the wings yet?"

"V'sol," U'kaiah offered. "He hasn't learned to temper his aggression in or out of the sky. He's just annoying on the ground, but he could pose a real danger in Threadfall."

"Agree on that. We also have few green- and blueriders aged fifteen or under. Like Karri and U'tew," E'naer said.

"What about M'nas?" one of the other assistants asked. "He'll turn sixteen in two days."

T'mahl looked over at U'kaiah. "What do you think? You've been a wingleader and you've worked with M'nas for a while now."

The bronzerider pondered that a moment. The boy was pretty mature for his age, but a little longer with the weyrlings might not be a bad idea.
"It's a tough call, T'mahl. I think that he would benefit from the leadership opportunity much more than sticking him straight into the wings."

"Agreed," the Second nodded. "E'naer, were there any greens or blue you noticed that might also benefit from a little extra leadership training? I know we're always looking for good 'Thirds in the wings."

"I'm almost tempted to name Talwyn, but the wing's are in need of greenriders. That brownrider, T'tag, would make wonderful 'second one day in distant future. And he's not yet seventeen," E'naer answered after moment of thoughtful silence.

"I agree. But I think he already has the confidence to lead. He could use the experience in the wings now I think." U'kaiah had hoped he could pull T'tag into Cyan in fact.

T'mahl waved off the debate. "Well, he's one we can take a closer look at later. Let's come back to him in a bit. What about Kamira?"

"Wings," E'naer suggested curtly.

U'kaiah nodded his agreement, and the Weyrlingmaster Second made a note. "Is there anyone else anyone can think of that might need to stay in the weyrling wing for whatever reason?"

"No, I don't think so. Everyone else seems to be ready for the fighting wings," The weyrlingmaster's Third said.

"Good," T'mahl nodded. "Now we can sit here and debate wing placements all day, and we most likely will. I'd like to get some of the details worked out before we launch into it such as when, where, and how. Any ideas?"

"We could make it complete surprise: Have ordinary full wing drill, call them all to the dining cavern and start dealing out the wing placements," E'naer grinned.

"Or perhaps a full review. A showcase for the wingleaders to see that these new Weyrlings can do," U'kaiah suggested.

"Both fine ideas," T'mahl nodded. "I like the idea of letting them show off a bit, but surprise always makes an event memorable." "How about the when part?" E'naer asked.

"No need to rush. We still need to coordinate with the wingleaders and weyrleader." T'mahl tapped his pencil against the knuckles of his hand as he considered the timing. "I would say no sooner than two-sevendays.
The day before a restday is ideal since I'm sure there will be a bit of celebrating going on. One day to celebrate, ask to give them one more day to sleep it off and then send them on their way."

"That would make it, 20th? I hope there's no fall scheduled," E'naer counted. He couldn't remember Threadfall days anymore, not straight out of hand, like he used to when he had been ordinary wingrider.

"None the 20th," U'kaiah replied, having the schedule memorized as Wingleaders were in the habit of doing. "But there is Threadfall on the 23rd. That would mean Thread would Fall their first day in the wings."

"Well, obviously they would not be flying Threadfall that day," T'mahl nodded. "But they could possibly go to the pre-Fall meeting for their wing. I think that would be a valuable introduction, and give them almost a full seven-day until Thread falls again. I like that."

E'naer crossed one item from his list. "Then, to the actual graduation. Will the Weyrlingmaster be there to give the traditional speech for the graduating weyrlings?" E'naer asked, the cynism in his voice betraying what he felt of the absent wingleader.

"Your guess is as good as mine, E'naer. But until the Weyrleader decides that a change needs to be made, I think we should _assume_ he will be there."

"Yes, and Thread will start falling upwards," U'kaiah muttered, crossing his arms across his chest in annoyance at the Weyrlingmaster's apparent incompetence.

"Let's see, we have the show-drill as usual? Then the speech, weyrlings get their new knots and assignments to the wings and then party?" E'naer checked.

"I think that would be the plan, E'naer," T'mahl said as he made his own notes on the schedule. "Now, looking at the candle in the corner, I'd say its time we end this meeting for now. Please keep a close eye on the weyrlings for the next day or two. I'd like to decide on their wing placements and give the preliminary lists to the Wingleaders before the end of the sevenday. Is there anything else?"

"Guess not. Man, I need klah," E'naer said and stretched.

"Yeah, me too," U'kaiah nodded, glad this meeting wasn't going to drag on much longer.

Klah wasn't a bad idea. T'mahl figured he had better grab a pot of that on his way up to the Weyrlingmaster's room to see just how bad off he was. When no one else spoke up the Weyrlingmaster Second finally nodded. "All right than. Let's adjourn."

E'naer started to gather his things. He waited until U'kaiah had left to say few privat words to T'mahl. "Don't you think U'kaiah would make a fine Weyrlingmaster? Shells, any one of us would make a better Weyrlingmaster than the current one."

"U'kaiah is more valuable as a Wingleader. But don't worry, E'naer. I'm sure its only a matter of time..."
