This was the bit he liked best when it came to the weyrlings. Although there would be an official ceremony for graduation, sometimes it was worth telling them individually. Especially if they had caught the eye of a particular wing, or there was a reason for the choice.
"Good afternoon, Weyrlingmaster," Shayla smiled as she approached. "My duty to Alylth."
"And mine to Kiranth," replied J'an as he gestured her to take a seat.
"You're probably wondering why I asked you here today," he began as he also sat down.
Her smile turned a bit nervous. "I am."
"Well there is no need to worry. There really is nothing wrong, in fact it's good news."
Relieved, she leaned back in her chair. "What is it?"
"You've been assigned to a wing at last. We were only waiting for a slot to become available, and one has. There will be an official ceremony, but I wanted to tell you first."
A Wing! At last! She couldn't keep the beaming grin from her face. "Am I allowed to know which one?" Shayla couldn't wait to tell T'voal!
"It'll be the Weyrleader's wing, that's quite an honour you know." He could see from the look on her face that the simple news of being tapped to a wing was bringing her joy.
Her brown eyes grew wider. "The Weyrleader's?"
"There is a reason for it." J'an looked at her. "Firstly, the Wingsecond there had been taking notes on your performance during drills. Apparently he marked you an Kiranth down as a good fit for their wing."
Still beaming, she sat straighter in her chair. The Wingsecond noticed _her_? Shards and shells... **Did you hear that, Kiranth?**
}:We are the best,:{ the green replied, her tone happily smug. }:I've always known we are.:{ "Did he give any specific reason?" Shayla couldn't help but ask, wanting to know exactly what had caught his eye.
"Not particularly." He watched her for a moment, "There is another reason."
"There is?"
"Your weyrmate." It was common policy not to put weyrmated couples in the same wing. There was a risk that they would put each other before the rest, and in fall you needed everyone focused on the task at hand.
She frowned. "T'voal? What about T'voal?"
"Weyrmated riders don't get put into the same wing," explained J'an.
"Threadfall, as I'm sure you know is chaotic enough without the added worry of loved ones near you in fall. That's why you had to wait for a slot in another wing."
"Oh. I see." That made sense.
"So, as of tomorrow, you report to the Wingsecond, and he'll fill you in with what you need to know. Well done Shayla, you'll fit in just fine."
"Thank you, sir," she smiled, rising to her feet. "Thank you very much."
"You're welcome."
