"So, now you've found out a little something from my long list of
problems." N'vanik said as he sat down on the couch beside her. He was
uncomfortable about what he had told her, but he was doing his best to
hide it. "Maybe you should tell me something. Just to be fair." He smiled
and handed her a glass of liquor.
"Like what, for instance?" she asked before taking a sip.
"Oh, there's gotta be something I don't know about you. A juicy tidbit,
maybe even a deep dark secret?" He draped an arm casually across her
shoulders.
"I don't think I have any deep, dark secrets," she grinned, shifting so
her head could rest on his shoulder. Trae tapped the stem of her wine
glass thoughtfully, and her grin turned into a sudden, sly smile as she
tilted her head back to look at him. "And I think you are well-acquainted
with all my...juicy tidbits."
"Aw, come on. Everybody has _some_ secrets." He teased.
"Well...how about this: I want to have children someday. Does that count
as being a secret?"
"Not a very good one." N'vanik took a drink. "If I didn't know better, I'd
say you were boring." His eyes glinted.
"Boring?" She glared at him, but an amused grin was lifting at the
corners of her mouth. "Well, what do you _want_ me to tell you, hmm? I'm
not a deep, dark, mysterious person, you know. I'm just a goldrider who
happens to love good wine," she held up her glass, "and appreciate good
lovers." She gave him an impish smile.
"At least you have good taste." He returned her smile. His expression
turned serious as he studied her. "You're just too perfect, Traelyn."
One brow rose. She'd never heard that one before! "Too perfect?"
"Yeah. You're beautiful, a goldrider, great between the furs, friendly to
everyone as far as I've seen, and you have sex with me and not U'kaiah."
This last item was accompanied by a smirk. "Even your temper makes you
more appealing." There was a question on the tip of his tongue but he held
it back, fearing the answer.
"My, my...you're just full of flattering compliments tonight, aren't you?"
Her tone teased him, but there was a serious look in her eyes as she
returned his gaze.
"Complimenting you is easy. I have so many things to choose from." He knew
she was waiting for him to say something else, but he didn't feel like
having another one-sided sharefest, or asking that question.
She gave him a slow smile and nestled further against him, one hand
caressing up his side, her touch affectionate.
For a moment he simply enjoyed the feel of her against him. The corner of
his mouth turned up, amused that he was actually cuddling.
Trae tilted her head up so she could press her lips against the side of
his neck, then they trailed to the spot just below his earlobe, her teeth
gently teasing the soft skin there.
Cuddling was over as far as he was concerned. N'vanik put his drink down
on the table so he could have both hands free. Nagging worries were pushed
back in his mind as he turned his attention to Trae's body. It was so much
easier than talking.
Traelyn knew him well enough now to know that when he moved fast like
this, he was avoiding something. Her eyes closed of their own volition as
she felt her body begin to respond to his questing hands. Of their own
accord, her fingers moved up to clench in his hair as he bent his head to
the curve of her neck and shoulder. Her breath quickened. Why wouldn't
he just _talk_ to her?
