Breaking the Rules, Part 3: Punishment

Writers: Eimi, Emma, Paula
Date Posted: 12th September 2006

Characters: Kustaava, J'an, M'galec
Description: Kustaava receives her punishment from J'an and M'galec.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 9 of Turn 3
Notes: Notes: I hope you still remember the parts 1&2.

Ava stood in the Weyrlingmaster's office, facing the Weyrlingmaster and his 'second. She was pulling her shoulders down, hunching her back and neck, trying to look as small as possible. She was expecting angry words
and to Ava's experience, angry words were followed by angry blows, from fist or belt. Mostly she was filled with remorse and regret of what she had done, but there was still that part of her that reminded defiant, rebellious.

"Just what did you think you were doing out there?" began J'an. "Tell me what you were thinking to try something like that."

"I wasn't thinking, exactly. I was just testing the straps I've made on her and on whim, mounted her. And then we were in the air," Kustaava tried to explain. She wasn't making excuses, those wouldn't work.

"I suppose you realise now why we have rules about not flying alone. This is the precise reason for them. The pair of you have been incredibly lucky, that's something I think M'galec will agree with."

His 'Second stood behind him, arms folded across his chest as he eyed the weyrling with a look akin to disgust. "Indeed."

Ava hung her head, stared her toes and just hoped she looked contrite instead of rebellious.

"Okay Ava," said J'an. "If the position was reversed, what punishment would you give?" J'an hoped that making her think of a suitable punishment would make her realise how serious this was.

M'galec fought the urge to roll his eyes. Typical J'an, trying to be everyone's buddy. It was clear what her punishment should be! Ground her and hold her back! If the Weyrlingmaster thought his 'Second would just watch while he let this girl get off easily...

"I don't know..." Ava's voice trailled off. She thought what her father would do to her..."Whipping?"

"This is _serious_ young woman," M'galec roared, his fists planted on his hips. "The Weyrlingmaster asked you a question. Now answer it!"

"I did. If you thought that was joke, you're obviouly don't know my father," Ava retorted back. She was steeling herself for the blow.

"This is a _Weyr_, not a cothold in the back of /between/," the Second snapped back, crossing his arms across his chest. "We do _not_ whip people here."

J'an sighed. Neither of them seemed to have got the point. "We don't use physical punishment. As this is serious... Well firstly you are grounded,
and not just for as long as the healers say, as long as I say. You can forget any free time. If you don't have chores, you'll report to myself or M'galec and we will find something for you to do. Don't expect to get off lightly with this."

"Yes, sir," Ava replied to J'an but the glances she keep giving to M'galec's direction indicated that she thought him totally capable of physical punishment.

"I'll also have to think seriously on whether or not you keep pace with the rest of your class. We won't hold Mindath back, but you need to learn to show some restraint and to think a little," continued J'an. "You will have a lot of hard work to do if you expect to graduate with your classmates."

M'galec couldn't help the little glimmer of a smug smile touch his lips. It was about time someone else to note of just what an immature troublemaker this greenrider was proving to be.

"Yes, sir," Ava replied with a meek tone. What else there was to say?

"Now go and be with your dragon, no doubt she needs you now. But you can report back here after supper and we'll look at what you'll be working on for the next few months."

"Yes, sir," Kustaava said again.
