Description: Kustaava flies on Mindath before she's ready for it and gets J'an and M'galec on her.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 9 of Turn 3
Kustaava sat on a rock, working to make the first straps to Mindath. The green was sunning herself nearby. The dragonet had now reached the age where she could practice flying under the Weyrling staff's watchful eye and Ava was getting impatient. She knew it wouldn't take a long before they would be flying together. But those final sevendays felt so long.
"Okay, I think these are done. Let's try them on you. Get up, lazybones", Ava said fondly and walked over to her with the straps.
Mindath obediently rose to her feet. }: I'm not lazy bones, :{ she protested when Ava put on the straps. "Could you hold out your leg so I can stand on it?" The dragon complied and Ava stood up to her leg to get the straps closed.
"Of course you're not. That's called teasing, remember? Do these feel uncomfortable?" Ava replied and asked.
}: Should they feel uncomfortable? :{ "No, that's why I ask. If they are uncomfortable, they are not correctly set," Ava explained patiently.
}: Aha. I don't feel them all. Is that good? :{ "Yes, that means they are not too tight," the weyrling girl said and scratched Mindath's neck. She was still standing on the dragon's front leg, she only had to swung her leg up and she would be sitting on her back.
Without second thought, she did it and was soon firmly seated between Mindath's ridges. Clicking the straps on was the next logical step.
}: Are we going to fly together now? :{ Mindath asked eagerly.
Ava paused to consider. Mindath had grown a lot since the hatching, she could already fly on her own. She was strong and Ava really didn't weight that much, so what harm could it do? A part of her said: No, don't even think about it. Don't you think they know best with their turns of experience? But the other part, the rebellious, wild part said: Sevenday here or there, how it would matter? The temptation won over the reason.
"Let's go, let's fly!" Ava said to Mindath with voice full of excitement. That it was forbidden, made it all more exciting.
The young green crouched, opened her wings and pushed herself into the air. Ava let out a wild whoop of joy. They were flying!
Mindath started to whimper.
"What's wrong?" Kustaava asked, alarmed. A doubt started to worm her gut, maybe this wasn't such a wise thing to do after all.
}: My wings hurt! :{
**Then, land, right away! **
The dragonet obeyed. Her landing was far from smooth, it was more close to a crash. If Ava hadn't wearing straps, she would had fallen off Mindath's back. She quickly opened the straps and slid down while Mindath's whimpers turned to yelps of pain.
}:M'galec! Hurry! Mindath's in pain!:{ Dwarkanath called his lifemate. The bronze's rider jumped out from the warm water and pulled his pants on over his wet legs. **Has J'an been informed?**
}:She's screaming for all of us. We must hurry, she's in terrible distress!:{
**I'm coming, I'm coming!** Sharding water soaked fingers! They finally were able to fasten the buttons on his trousers and he grabbed his shirt. **Ask Vilarth to let Lenala know an emergency came up. I might not be able to make it for dinner. Ask her to pass on my apologies." The shirt was thrown over his head and the rider expertly vaulted to his bronze's neck. **Let's go!**
Hastily finishing explaining a drill to a young bluerider, J'an shot outside to where Alylth was waiting. The summons by the bronze had been swift and urgent. Mindath and her rider were in trouble and they needed them.
**Where are they?**
}:Not far,:{ replied the dragon as the Weyrlingmaster settled imself. }:We'll be there soon.:{ "I'm so sorry, Mindy, I'm so sorry!" Kustaava kept repeating. Tears were streakind down her cheeks and dripping from her jawline. She was helping her life-mate to right herself. "I didn't meant to hurt you, I'm sorry."
Dwarkanath came in to land close-by and M'galec vaulted from his back. "What's going on here? What happened?"
"We...I..." Ava struggled to get it out. She knew she couldn't get away from this one. **You screwed up, girl, now face the consequences! But did it have to be _him_? **
"I was flying, with Mindath. And now she's hurt her wings."
}: And my ankle, it got twisted when I landed on it,:{ Mindath added. "Shards... of all the stupid things..." M'galec growled under his breath. Let J'an deal with her. He would look to the little green.
"Where on her wings hurts?"
"Where your wings hurt?" Ava repeated the question to her dragon. }: Worst pain is here:{, Mindath's head twisted and she touched the place where her wings connected with her torso with her muzzle.
"The- the shoulder joints?" Ava said, all her dragon anatomy suddenly forgotton.
"The shoulder joints..." Shards, M'galec knew nothing about a dragon's shoulder joints. Wings he could check, but shoulder joints... "Is that the only place?" he asked as he lay a hand gently over where the shoulder met the wing, trying to feel is there was any change in temperature under his hand.
And that was the point at which the weyrlingmaster himself arrived.
Surveying the scene he dismounted from his seat on Alylth's neck. "Ava, M'galec." He drew in a deep breath. "Is your dragon okay?"
"She tried to fly on Mindath. I'm trying to assess the damage, but I can tell you know we're going to need M'van. Her shoulder is swelling and feels a bit warm. Might be a sprain." M'galec informed him.
Turning to Ava he repeated his question, "Is there anywhere else she is hurt?"
As M'galec waited for Ava to reply, J'an was already asking Alylth to get hold of Kiloth and find out if he and M'van were able to get themselves out here. The bluerider was the best dragonhealer currently at the weyr, he'd worked wonders with U'das' bronze, and if anyone could help this green he could. But as for the rider....
"Her back leg, she landed badly on it," Ava replied. She was feeling absolutely wretched.
"I think I had better leave that for M'van," M'galec said looking up at the Weyrlingmaster. There were limitations to his knowledge of dragonhealing. "Is he on his way?"
"Alylth says so, replied J'an. "He'll be here soon."
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I didn't meant to hurt her," Ava was still crying.
"Once we get her sorted. Then you are going to have a little chat with M'galec and myself," said J'an relatively mildly. He didn't want to distress her even more as that would impact the dragonet, and it was hard to keep his voice in check. What had the girl been thinking!
