Description: Orlan is searched.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 12, day 28 of Turn 3
Orlan pulled himself onto the float at the end of the dock. Swimming was fortantly one of the requierments for his lessons that he didn't mind. He waved to the young dolphin who'd joined him and reached for a towle to dry off with. Out of habit he looked skyward hoping to spot a dragon but thr sky was empty. With a sigh the appretice walked back toward Hall proper to change for his next class.
"Excuse me," the greenrider interrupted the young apprentice. "Can you direct me to the Hallsecond?"
Orlan jumped out the sound of a voice. Spinning he found himself face to face with a greenrider. "Ma'ma? His office is this way." he pointed the direction he was going. "But I think he's meeting with my father _er_ the Hallmaster."
"Can you show me there then? I have a message for the Hallsecond."
"Uh, yes ma'ma of course." he smiled and turned back toward the buliding. "This way."
"Thank you."
Orlan waited for the greenrider after she's entered the office, standing by the outer door, hoping to get a glimps of her green. In spite of his father's warnings the boy couldn't keep from hoping that he might find a way to the Weyr.
A few moments later, Oria emerged. "Hello again," she said noticing the young apprentice still there. She gave him a smile as her green flit came out of /between/, chittering away.
Brown eyes widende in suprise as he saw the firelizard, a firelizard and a dragon? She was lucky. "Hi."
"This is Dhory," she said. "Would you like to meet her?"
"Sure... She's cute." he knew green firelizards where girls, just like green dragons.
Holding out her arm, the green settled on her shoulder, and then gently made her way down where she gave the boy a wide eyed glance. "A real minature dragon this one, just like Degrorth."
"Is it true that they breath fire?"
"She can do, but Degrorth's is a little more impressive."
"What's it like?" he asked.
"What's what like?" asked Oria returning his question with one of her own. "Riding and flying with her, or when she fights thread?"
"Any of it. Impressing? Standing at the hatching? Where you searched or are you from the Weyr?"
"Slow down a moment," she said, noticing the flood of questions. "I was born in the north, but moved to the weyr about two turns ago. I impressed Degrorth, and here I am."
"Oh sorry," Orlan ducked his head for a moment the asked the question that had really been on his mind. "What about getting searched?"
"You need to find someone with knots like mine."
"Like your?" Orlan knew little of riders knotes, only those a crafter would wear. He studied the one's on the woman's shoulder with intrest.
The had Dolphin Cove's colors and some green in them, he guessed that was for her dragon. But the rest made no sense to him.
Seeing a puzzled look on his face, she began to explain them. "That's Dolphin Cove, my craft, green for Degrorth, and that means she's a search dragon."
"She's a search dreagon?" he was awed, "Could I meet her?"
"Of course you can, she likes people."
Pure joy shown of the boys face as he followed the greenrider outside.
Not only was he meeting another dragon, but a search dragon too.
"Degrorth love," she called to the dragon. "Come over here, and meet..." Her voice trailed off as she realised she didn't know the lad's name.
"I'm appreentice Orlan ma'ma." he said helpfully.
"Orlan," she repeated as the dragon made the short glide over to where they were stood. She lifted her head and eyed him curiously.
}:I like him.:{
**You like him, or you 'like' him?**
}:In that way, yes,:{ was the dragon's reply.
"She says she likes you," began Oria carefully, watching for his reaction.
"She likes me?" His eyes lite with hope he didn't quite dare show too much of. "That's good right?"
"It's very good, it means she thinks you could impress."
"YES!" Orlan jumped in the air. Now there was no way his father could say he couldn't go to the Weyr. He'd been Searched!
"There is a hatching coming up, so you'll need to work things out with your masters here."
"They can't say no can they?" he suddenly felt very close to panick.
"It's your decision as to whether or not to accept the search. But you do need to inform them, or your parents if you would prefer."
"The Hallmaster is my father." he said dryly. "Will you come back for me?"
"Once you have made your choice, then we can take it from there."
"What do you mean? Make my choice? I want to go."
"Then you've made your decision. Some people ask to think on it, some people even say no."
Orlan was stunned, "Why would they say no? Who wouldn't want to stand?" the thought if watching hatching break through their shells and chose thier lifemates, of being on the sands at the time...
"Some people have other commitments, a craft, a spouse perhaps."
"Oh, ok. So now what?"
"Speak to your father, then you can either come to the weyr now, or closer to the time of the hatching."
"Could he send his firelizard to the Weyr with a note?"
"Of course he could."
"Thank you greenrider! Thank you so much Degrorth!" he resisted the urge to huge eaither the dragon or her rider.
"You're welcome."
