A Father-Son Talk

Writers: Cali, Rebecca
Date Posted: 11th July 2006

Characters: O'ran, Mosler
Description: Orlan asks his father if he can visit the Weyr.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 12, day 3 of Turn 3

Orlan hovered near his fathers office for a candle mark, waiting for the master dolphineer to return. He had decided that he would ask permission to at least visit the Weyr. Anything to get him closer to dragons.

"Orlan?" Mosler asked curiously when he saw his son sitting in front of his door as he approached. "What are you doing here?" Orlan was rarely anywhere near Mosler's office, and when it was, it was to deliver messages; so when he saw nothing in the boy's hands he added concerned, "Is something wrong?"

"No father, I... I wanted to ask you something."

He opened the door, relieved, "Well ask then." he said with a smile as he continued into the office. It was almost time for dinner, and Mosler considered asking Orlan if he wanted to join him; not in the dining hall of course, that would be inappropriate to have a apprentice sit at his table with him, but he could have dinner sent to his quarters, it'd be a good chance to try and spend some time with his son.

"I'd like to go to the Weyr."

Mosler thought he heard wrong at first, so occupied were his thoughts on dinner, "The Weyr?" he asked uncertainly, one eyebrow raised. "Why do you want to go there?"

"The weyrwoman second's gold just laid her clutch and I'd like to see them. Maybe be there for the hatching?" He didn't quite dare tell his father he wanted to _stand_ at the hatching.

"The Queen does not want young boys sniffing about her eggs, son." he said dismissively, "And you know I can't play favorites by allowing you to accompany me to the hatching." This last comment was said a bit harsher since it seemed obvious that his son needed a reminder of their agreement for no preferential treatment.

"But I meet a brown dragon and his rider told me that he liked me. I thought that maybe it I could go to the Weyr..." he began.

"Orlan," his father said sharply, "I don't want you bothering the dragonriders. It is a privilege that they offer us transport, and a apprentice pestering them about the Weyr is no way to show our appreciation."

"He was visiting the dolphins and ask me to help him wash his brown. I wasn't bothering him."

Mosler looked at his son for a moment, his eyes squinted as he examined his face. Orlan wasn't one to openly lie about something, but sometimes children stretch the truth in their excitement. Finally he gave a nod and said, "Of course, if a rider asks for assistance you must give it; but I will not hear of you hovering around the dragonriders in the future. They are too busy, and you have too much studying to do."

"Yes sir." Orlan was disappointed, he had been hoping to get his father's permission. There was always search, he told himself.

Perturbed by his son's behavior, he thought about just sending him on his way; but he _had_ missed the boy, so he went with his original idea. "Now, I was about to order some dinner up, would you care to join me?"

The offer surprised Orlan, his father was usually too busy. "That would be nice."

"Good," Mosler nodded, "We can talk about how your classes are progressing."

Orlan tried not too look too disappointed, some time with his father was better than none, even if it meant discussing his grades.
