Description: Aydhara and Felorin trade petty remarks
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 2, day 5 of Turn 13
Tiareth watched Rath approach with his rider, and while everything in her prim posture radiated a judgement bordering on derision, her tone was coolly polite as she greeted her clutch-brother with, }: Good morning. :{ Her attention returned to her rider, who was cutting up meat with a daintiness that was veiling her dislike of handling raw flesh.
Rath rumbled a pleasant enough answer, but his focus was entirely on the flank of herdbeast Aydhara carried. He was big enough now that he _could_ reach out and tug it from her arms if he wanted, and he desperately did, but the panic and hysterics from the evening meal still echoed in his memory.
"Back up, buddy." Aydhara told him. He paused mid-step, standing almost nicely until she dumped the entire thing on the ground for him to gnaw. "Be careful not to bite down on bones."
Tiareth’s eyes slid to this momentarily. }: How ungraceful, :{ she remarked to her rider. }: Eating like a porcine. :{
Felorin’s lips twisted into a smug, superior smile.
Rath did not notice the judgement at all. The moment the meat hit the ground he descended on it with a single-minded voraciousness, claws digging into it and wings mantled possessively as if someone might try to steal it away from him.
Aydhara retreated back to grab a much smaller bucket of scraps and set it down at her own feet, sitting across from Rath to supervise the only slightly concerning crunch of the blue gnawing around bone. After a moment of concentration, Slate appeared above the feeding pens, taking a slow and cautious circle down to land in Aydhara's lap. This one she fed by hand, careful to watch her fingers in his eagerness to get a meal without the new blue's jealous supervision.
"There we go." She said out loud, mostly to the two boys, "We're starting to get a rhythm, aren't we?"
“You should work on their habits early and often,” Felorin remarked as though she had the right to give another weyrling a lecture. “Temper their appetites. Else you’ll end up with a headstrong youngster who outweighs you and works against your commands.”
Tiareth paused in her delicate eating to say, }: I would never. We are one, you and I. :{
"My boys would _never_." Aydhara said easily, even as Slate yanked a too-big piece from between her fingers and held it in his forepaws while he chewed on it, matching the much larger dragonet at her feet.
Rath looked up at everyone, confused, and hacked up a piece of bone stuck in his throat.
“How fortuitous that he didn’t just choke on that bone,” Felorin said dryly. The petty part of her wanted to point out that Rath could have just been lost forever so easily but there was a greater part, a part she would have to think upon later, that was horrified at how easily the same moment could have been applied to Tiareth, even perfect as she was.
“Really, Aydhara, you of all people should know _how_ to deal with dragons. You grew up around them,” Felorin instead said with some of her usual caustic nature showing.
"If dragons went /between/ over every little thing, none of them would make it long enough to fight Thread." Aydhara said dismissively. "He's fine. The best, really. I won't be able to pick the pieces out of his meal when he's the size of a house. Tiareth is going to have learned incompetence if you keep babying her."
Rath cleared his throat and dove into the food again.
The word ‘incompetence’ had both dragon and rider shifting multicolored eyes at Aydhara with wicked quickness. Tiareth’s faceted eyes swirled angrier warm hues, clearly insulted, while Felorin’s heterochromatic ones took on a coolness that warned of a slower moving danger. There was a measure of sharp silence before Felorin quietly, frigidly said, “The pursuit of a higher standard takes more practice, requires more skill, than that of the commonplace. If you want to be the best, Aydhara, you’ll have to do more than just _think_ that you are. Which, clearly, you and Rath are not.”
That caught Rath's attention. Or maybe it was Aydhara's anger, burning hot in their minds. His head snapped up from the carcass, muzzle slick with blood, eyes shifting toward a restless yellow-orange. His wings lifted, just slightly, and he looked between Aydhara to Felorian to Tiareth and then back again.
She thought about going over there and wiping that smug look off Felorin's face. Except she couldn't, not while the dragonets were still small and they were still under the close eyes of the weyrlingmasters. "My boys are learning just fine." She said too hotly. "We'll see anyway, won't we? We'll be flying soon enough."
Tiareth fluffed proudly as her rider said, “Yes. And we will show you what a standard looks like.” Felorin had no doubt that Tiareth would be the most beautiful, most perfect example of how a dragon should fly. Aydhara and Rath would probably tumble from the sky.
Aydhara snorted under her breath at that, the heat of her temper settling into stubbornness as she watched Rath return to his meal with renewed enthusiasm. Let both of them preen and posture. "We'll see about that." Aydhara said. She pulled a rag out of her pocket to clean the mess from Slate's face and claws, and eventually to get the worst of Rath before she made him swim in the lake.
}: She will not understand, :{ Tiareth said, adding dismissively, }: which is why Rath chose her. _Blues_. :{ The darling green snorted derisively. }: Not an original thought in the whole color. :{
Felorin haughtily agreed. **Which is why none of them shall ever fly us.** When she sensed Tiareth’s confusion, she added, **You’ll understand when you get older. Just remember that a blue isn’t worth our time.**
Tiareth shuffled her wings delicately. }: As if I shall forget. :{
“Well, then,” Felorin said as she finished up with her perfect little dragon. “That’s enough jovial banter for the day. Do try not to let Rath drown in the lake because he doesn’t realize his reflection isn’t another dragon to befriend.”
}: Tell her that's just a shadow in the lake, stupid.:{ Rath said, and Aydhara had to purse her lips together to stop from grinning.
"Careful, Felorin." Aydhara said instead, "You risk forgetting to feed Tiareth if you keep that mirror in your alcove."
“Would you like to borrow that mirror? It might do you some good. Your hair is an absolute mess, you know,” Felorin replied evenly. She didn’t wait for a reply though. She was already done with the conversation.
Aydhara watched Felorin stalk off with Tiareth at her heels. A hand surreptitiously went to her hair, temporarily smoothing down some of the wildness and tucking some loose strands into the messy bun. "What a piece of work," she muttered and reached for Rath's blood-spattered face. "C'mon, buddy. We'll get you a bath before your nap."
