Hesbia

The first sevenday went by in a blue blur. Donnise was exhausted from late nights and early mornings, midnight feedings and shovelling what seemed like a never ending amount of dragon poop. The other weyrlings in her class were all from Dragonsfall and seemed to know each other already, except for Oriene who was a dolphineer and therefore infinitely cool.

She managed to pry Zheverith off her a bit early, and her stomach was growling again so she headed to the Dining Cavern for lunch. Once she'd collected her meal she stood and scanned the Cavern looking for a familiar face. At Far Island, she'd known everyone.

Another girl brushed past her and Donnise lit up when she recognized her as the other female bluerider in the weyrling barracks. A Senior Weyrling, but when did that matter? "Hey, wait up!"

The other weyrling paused but the expression on her face wasn't welcoming. "For?" she asked.

"Me, obviously!" Donnise was grinning as she came to a stop beside her. "We're the only two blue weyrlings who are girls. Let's sit together! Here?" She plunked her tray down on a table nearby and gestured to the seat next to her. "You're... ah, it's embarrassing but I don't actually know your name? I arrived just before the Hatching so I didn't really get a chance to get introduced to anyone."

There was a scowl. A pause as the seat offered wasn't taken. "You got a blue dragon too? What's his name?" the other girl asked.

"Zheverith. What's yours?" Donnise asked as she stuffed a meatroll in her mouth.

"Oriveth." Hesbia's expression didn't change but she cautiously sat down. "Where are you from?" Shells, if she was about to be stuck with another hidebound Hold brat, she was going to throw something.

"Far Island Weyr," Donnise's voice was muffled by the meatroll. "I got sent here because I got lost sailing and had to get rescued, and because N'kyri is here. It's kind of cold though. Have you been through a winter here yet? I hear that it gets so cold your skin will freeze off in minutes, and you can throw boiling water into the sky and it turns to snow before it lands!"

Great, another Weyrbrat. Sort of. "Who's N'kyri?" Hesbia asked, even though she was also curious about how the girl had gotten lost while sailing. Or why pick here when it was indeed so cold. Surely an island would be a better location than this snowy rock.

"My father. He's a bluerider, like me now! Where are you from?" Donnise asked.

"Nowhere," Hesbia answered defensively. Her tone dripped churlishly. "I'm Holdless. One of those murderous scoundrels rescued from the floods. One of _those_ people."

}: I don't think of you as any of that, :{ Oriveth pointed out, mildly upset at his rider's snide attitude.

Donnise's eyes widened. "Really? How'd you get to be Holdless? I heard about the flooding in the caves. Despite what _some_ people think, I have a healthy respect for water. That must have been really scary."

It had been scary. It had been the worst day of her life so far. But Hesbia wasn't about to tell this scrawny brat that. So, anger still in her tone, she said, "My uncle. He was a cosmic screw up and got us kicked out the Hold. More than once."

The other weyrling nodded. "That's not fair. He should have been kicked out, not you."

Hesbia scoffed. "Yeah, well he was, and then my father, who was his brother, couldn't let his only brother go out there into danger alone so we all went. Ask me how happy I was over that."

"How happy were you over that?"

Her scowl returned. "It was a sarcastic question."

"What's sarcastic?" Donnise asked, her eyes widening. "Is that a swear?"

Hesbia gave her a very long look like she was trying to figure out if the other woman was an actual dimglow or pretending to be one in order get a joke over on Hesbia. "Guess they don't do a lot of education at Far Island," she finally decided.

Just then, Zheverith stirred and stretched in his wallow in the Candidate Barracks. }:Where are you? I need you! I'm hungry!:{

Donnise's laughter was cut short. **I'm on my way!** she told her dragon. She plucked a second meatroll from her plate, stuck a handful of cheese in her pocket, and folded up a slice of roast wherry and shoved it in her mouth. "Gotta go, Zheverith is awake. I'm glad we're friends now, Hesbia. See you 'round!" she said, and with a cheerful wave got up and left the table.

An incredibly stunned Hesbia just sat there for a moment after Donnise left. "Friends?" she finally asked no one. "Who the feck said we were friends?!"

Oriveth chuckled. }: Apparently she did. I like her. She is...refreshing. :{

"She's annoying and daft is what she is. I won't be surprised if her dragon doesn't have to pull her out of a well or something dumb like that one day." Hesbia muttered as she shoved a bite of food into her mouth. **Thank Faranth you and I aren't like that.**

Oriveth chuckled again in that rich tone that Hesbia wished she could weave into a scarf to wrap around her. }: I chose right for me. Zheverith chose right for him. :{

**Dumb blonde canine brain then, got it.**
