I'serin

I'serin

“Come in,” A’brevan didn’t get up at the knock on the door, remaining seated behind his desk with its stack of folders. It was three days until the next ‘Fall- really more like two and a half by now- and he had a lot of work ahead of him getting his wing in fighting condition for his first Threadfall as the Wingleader of Ridge.

Finishing writing something, he rolled the note up and slipped it into the tube tied to the leg of the green firelizard waiting patiently on the corner of his desk. “Take that to Zaleri. And do not hang around making a menace of yourself.” Poppy cocked her head at him, either in innocence or ignorance, and chirped before launching herself from the desk.

The office was more barren than it had been under R’enh, a stack of neatly packed crates waiting by the door to be returned to their owner, and as of yet the shelves and walls were bare, though there were a few framed paintings sticking out of a crate next to the desk, the top one a painting of the Weyr’s distinctive waterfalls. A’brevan gestured towards the empty chair across from his desk. “Please, have a seat. I’ll get right to it. With R’enh incapacitated, I will be taking the lead on Ridge wing, and you are being reassigned to act as Wingthird under myself and Wingsecond R’vayn.”

I'serin seemed to take all of this announcement with a calm aplomb. It was Aluneth who had some choice words about being assigned to a 'mere Wingthird position'. I'serin kept that to himself. He felt his status with the new leadership of Dragonsfall was precarious, as though he was being handled as some very real threat, rather than an inexperienced leader who had just done his best. He would do nothing to rock the boat more than his tenure had.

He did not like that R'enh was injured enough to relinquish his command. I'serin made note to talk to Saibra about it.

"Of course," the former Weyrleader answered. "My duty is to our Weyr. However I may assist with that. Please enumerate my responsibilities as a Wingthird and what you would like to see accomplished."

A'brevan frowned, "I assume you know the general duties. What have you been having T'mhas do for the last several months? And you might consider relaxing a little. The Holders might be impressed by words like 'enumerate', but most of the riders under you will just think you sound pretentious."

I'serin was beginning to wonder if everyone was going to treat him like a witless weyrling now that he was no longer Weyrleader. "I am aware of the basic duties of Wingthird but what are your expectations?" he amended.

"The expectation is that you learn how to lead a wing, so, truthfully, you'll be doing more than the basic administration duties a wingthird would normally be doing." A'brevan met I'serin's gaze evenly, "But we all know Tam is rubbish with hidework, so he wasn't doing your wing schedules or copying reports for you. What was he doing? That wasn't an idle question; I'm guessing that's the best place to start because it's probably the things you felt you were weak at." The task of training I'serin was a heavier weight on A'brevan's shoulders than the task of leading Ridge Wing. He'd been trained to lead since he'd first put on the bronze knots. This was a different responsibility, but he was determined not to let K'valdran down. "I've been tasked with making sure that you won't be a hazard to the riders under your command if Aluneth catches a senior gold again. K'valdran trained me, and he's asked me to train you."

It was that last comment that got under I'serin's skin. It was the same sort of condescending, judgmental attitude that his father had always used on him, as if I'serin had been absolutely inept. Did no one understand the _burden_ of being Weyrleader? Did no one think of the endless meetings, notes, conflicts, questions, tasks, lists, personalities, responsibilities, and obligations that weighed down those knots? On top of the need to eat and sleep?

What bothered I'serin more about the comment was the culture that was spreading under K'valdran's reign that I'serin had done nothing _but_ put the Weyr in danger. Yes, there was data to indicate a trend but any good that I'serin had done, especially with the hurdles he had faced, was quickly being buried beneath this narrative, and _that_ was what chafed I'serin now.

It would not do him any good to lose his temper with his new Wingleader but for a brief moment, I'serin heavily considered it.

"T'mhas's situation was unique in that being Wingthird for the Weyrleader's Wing, other responsibilities were assigned to him, since my duties as Weyrleader took me away from much of the day-to-day running of a Wing, but he did handle the sweepriders and small interpersonal disputes," he informed A'brevan, which was true but he struggled to keep his tone level so that he was not sounding petulant or cold. "Hence, why I asked about your expectations of me. If hidework and schedules are what you wish to assign to me, I will do it."

A'brevan rather suspected that being away from the day to day runnings of a Wing was the reason certain disasters had happened, but that didn't matter now. "Let's start with wing formations; I want you to plan our next two drills. We have three days to next 'fall and there's been some shuffles; our next practices are important." Making a brief show of shuffling papers, A'brevan joked, "I'm afraid I don't know yet if we have any interpersonal disputes in the wing, but I'm sure some will turn up that you can handle. Oh, and this month's wing party will be curry. You'll be expected to make or find a dish to pass." The monthly 'stew' parties had been a good tradition- A'brevan intended to continue them.

If I'serin felt adverse to forced socialization after how this meeting went and getting to know his Wingmates, he hid it as best as he could. "Yes, Wingleader," he answered numbly. A dish? That went with curry? "I will have those formations ready for tomorrow morning." _That_ at least he could do. He would ask K'mai about the party things later.

"Very good. Did you have any questions for me before I let you get back to your day?" A'brevan did his best to look open and welcoming, and not like he was quickly developing a tension headache.

None that he wanted answers of A'brevan. No, the answers I'serin now sought would best be asked of E'tariax during their next mindhealing session. "No, Wingleader." He inclined his head politely. "I will leave you to your work and speak with you in the morning."

A'brevan's firelizard reappeared above the desk, dropping a note down to her owner. A'brevan glanced down to see, 'Too good for the Dining Hall now? 20 minutes'. He chuckled, tucking the note away. He hoped his foster sister didn't sass the other wingleaders like this. "Actually, you're leaving me to my lunch. Then more work. Have a good day, I'serin, I'll see you tomorrow."
