I'serin

I'serin

It was Aluneth who noticed the approach of one of Galgaith's progeny, a waddling brown dragon, who he quietly observed until he alerted his rider softly with, }: We have company. :{

I'serin, washing from the other side of Aluneth, peered around. He gave the weyrling rider a polite nod but went back to scrubbing.

}:Hello, Aluneth,:{ Nazoth said politely as he stepped into the water.

His rider followed, squinting at the large bronze and then over at the rider with a large forehead and awkward face. "Huh, you're the Weyrleader. Well, were I guess. Tough break on that, yeah?"

}: Hello, Nazoth, :{ Aluneth returned politely enough, until he heard M'sar's comment to his rider. His tone turned more foreboding. }: I hope that your rider has not come over to rub salt in a wound. It would be most unwelcome. :{

I'serin, unaware of this exchange, made a small, self-deprecating expression. "The senior queen decides," he answered evasively. He was not in the mood to tread over a sore subject, though it seemed like everyone else was glad to do so.

}:Aluneth says you should be nice to his rider,:{ Nazoth told M'sar.

"Got the feeling a lot of folk weren't happy with you."

Nazoth reared up and splashed him. }:M'sar!:{

"Yeah, fine!" The weyrling sighed. "Heard you were the one who rescued the holdless, that true? I mean, lotta dragonriders were there, but the Weyrleader made the decision, yeah?"

"I was the one who made that decision, yes," I'serin answered, fully expecting to take the brunt of some judgment for his decision once again.

"Well, thanks for that," M'sar said quietly as he rubbed Nazoth's head, not looking at I'serin. "I wouldn't be here if not for that. Wouldn't have _him_." His love for Nazoth rose up, fierce and endless, and the brown nuzzled him.

Something seemed to ripple through the older bronzerider. Something that looked akin to relief mixed with validation. "You are welcome," he answered solemnly. He knew that plenty of people in the Weyr resented him for so many Holdless Impressing dragons, despite it being the _dragons'_ decision, but here at least was gratitude.

Hopefully, the Holdless who had Impressed were assimilating to their new duties well. That was not I'serin's problem to worry about either but he had a feeling people would try to toss that on his shoulders as well.

Aluneth snorted derisively. }: You are taking on burdens that you should not. Let others live in their judgment. You made the correct decision to save lives. :{

Letting that thought settle in his mind, I'serin asked, "What is his name?" though he could have easily asked Aluneth.

"Nazoth," M'sar said with warmth and pride. He stepped away to grab a handful of sweetsand and began lathering his dragon's golden-brown hide. "He's the biggest in his clutch."

There was no doubt about that. I'serin's eyes passed over the growing dragon again. How much of that was still baby fat though? "Is he flying yet?" he asked.

M'sar shook his head. "Gonna be soon, though. He's eager for it."

}:Soon I will be in the skies, where I belong. And then we will fight Thread,:{ Nazoth told Aluneth.

}: As is the duty of all dragons, :{ Aluneth intoned with heartfelt conviction. }: Though you must train diligently. Do not shirk your duties. :{

I'serin's expression was wry. "They usually are. Dragons do not like to be on the ground longer than they must. They were made for flight."

}:Mine does not like that word. But we do train very hard,:{ Nazoth said.

"He wants to do everything right now," M'sar said with affection as he scrubbed Nazoth.

"Though hopefully he is not attempting to do something before he -- and you -- are ready," I'serin cautioned. Some weyrlings got it in their head that being the best meant being first and they pushed the timeline on accomplishing that goal far too soon. It was a terrible thing to watch a young dragon be injured because of that sort of disregard for the rules.

Of course the Weyrleader -- former Weyrleader -- would be all about following rules. M'sar snorted. "You gonna scold us if we do?"

A derisive snort rippled through Aluneth. }: Impudent child, :{ he remarked to his rider.

I'serin did not answer. Instead, he quietly said, "No, for there are some lessons that one must learn through their own experience and not someone else's." He gave Aluneth's flank one last swipe, flicking away the last bit of oil. With soundless words passed between them, I'serin gathered up their supplies as Aluneth headed for the shore. "It was nice to meet you, weyrling M'sar," I'serin said with flat formality.

Another bronzerider with a stick up his ass. Surprise, surprise.

}:It was a pleasure to meet you, Aluneth,:{ Nazoth said, looking up at the bronze.

Aluneth looked down at the growing brown, unfurled his wings, and did not reply.
