Characters: K'thyr, E'rian
Description: K'thyr congratulates his son on his Impression
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 13
Notes: Mentioned: Th'alin

K'thyr left his daughter Athyra with Th'alin to go find their families a table at the Hatching feast that would be kicking off now that the Hatching was over. He figured Tyakerian would make his dejected way towards the Dining Hall at some point, or K'thyr would have Eometh find him. Not Impressing was one thing to deal with. Watching your sibling Impress was another. But K'thyr would handle that shortly.

His hurried steps and beaming grin took him to where the newest weyrlings were feeding their dragonets. Arms wide, K'thyr let out a loud, proud holler when he spotted his son Tsae -- no, he had a new name now but K'thyr didn't know it yet. "There you are!" he called with a laugh punctuating his words.

His son looked up. K'thyr immediately recognized that expression, that mix of wonder and fulfillment. How a personal miracle had just happened to you and you couldn't believe it but it was right there and would never leave you. Every dragonrider knew exactly what this moment was like.

Fatherly joy surged within K'thyr as he wrapped his thick arms around his willowy son. "I'm so proud of you," he said in a choked voice. "So, _so_ proud of you." As he drew back, his dark eyes were moist with emotion. "What's her name, son? And what did she name you?"

"Inarayth!" came the adoring declaration. "She says my name is E'rian. Dad, she was...so insistent! Like, she would have moved the Weyr to get to me." E'rian's hand touched the tiny green head that looked up at him.

"And she would have! No doubt about that," K'thyr agreed as he crouched to inspect the hatchling. His expression took on that clinical critique as he looked her over. "Lovely color, son. Does she mind if I touch her?"

E'rian quietly asked Inarayth, who puffed up her chest. }: Of course, :{ she told her rider. }: He'll find that I'm in fine shape and perfectly healthy. Though still hungry. :{

At E'rian's nod of permission, K'thyr's expert hands slid across the muscular contours of the small dragon. "She's a perfect specimen, son. Look at that build. I'd lay marks on her having no trouble flying her shift of Fall."

The mention of Threadfall paled E'rian's face. The thing that had taken his mother. The thing that constantly threatened to take away his father. His uncle. The thing that had been in the forefront of E'rian's mind since it had returned twelve, no, thirteen Turns ago.

Inarayth's head, with her oversized rainbow eyes, swiveled back up to look at him. He could _feel_ her digging at the fear, down to its origin. She was sunlight, exposing it even though he didn't want it dragged out into the open yet. It was a fear he was comfortable with, one that he knew, and she was pushing against it like a door she was determined to open.

He must have shown something in his expression. Or maybe it was the way Inarayth went tense with concentration at her task. Something tipped his father off to the exchange because he asked, "Everything okay, son?" He rose, concern in his dark eyes, as his hands went to E'rian's shoulders calmingly.

E'rian licked his lips, trying to collect himself. "Yeah, yeah, everything's fine. Just...overwhelming," he answered. That was definitely true, just not in the way his father probably imagined. **Stop that. Please. I don't want him to know that I'm afraid. Not right now.**

K'thyr didn't see the hatchling bristle since his attention was on his son but Inarayth backed up just enough to let her new rider breathe. "It can be overwhelming. That's normal," his father was saying, offering assurance. "It'll get easier, trust me, son. The first few days are an adjustment but you've heard Eometh before. You know what it's like to have a dragon in your head."

He did. But not one who was able to dive so _deeply_ into his everything. The miraculous joy that E'rian had felt upon Impression was now matched by the terrifying realization that Inarayth was pervasive. Invasive. She could cut through his indecisiveness. She could sear through his fears.

"It'll be okay," his father was saying, but he had no idea. E'rian nodded lamely, still feeling like the ground had been ripped out from under him and reformed into something sage green and draconic.

Inarayth bumped her head against his leg. E'rian felt a wave of assurance from her but the weakness in his legs sat opposite of it. "I need...I need to finish feeding her. She's hungry," he said, scrambling for some way out of this deluge of realizations. He clung to the fragile hope that she would forget it by tomorrow.

K'thyr squeezed his son's shoulders. "Right. She's probably ravenous. Don't let her overeat, remember that. You know how to do it right. Get her fed and settled and we'll see you at the feast?" When E'rian nodded, K'thyr kissed his son's forehead and then rested his against it. "I'm so proud of you, E'rian. Your mother would be too."

If only his mother was still alive.

Inarayth made an impatient sound, stomping her foot. K'thyr laughed and ruffled E'rian's hair. "She takes precedence now. Go take care of her and we'll see you in a bit." To his own dragon, he said, **Keep an ear out on her.** Because that's what fathers did.

}: Don't think you're getting off the hook that easily, :{ Inarayth said once K'thyr was gone. }: Your mother's fate is not yours. Nor is your father's. Your fate is your own and we will make one _together_. :{

Even though there was a fierceness to her tone, E'rian wasn't comforted by this blazing path she was determined to take them on. He hoped again that she would forget what she had so inadvertently discovered. It would be better that way.
