Being a Weyrleader meant that his time was limited but I'serin was not one to forget upcoming milestones in the lives of people he cared about. And one was coming up.
He found the Headwoman deep in the heart of the kitchens, where the fires blazed as spits of herdbeast turned. Quite possibly, this was the only place in all of Dragonsfall that stayed sweltering Turn-round. "Headwoman," he greeted. It was obvious from the glint in his hazel eyes that he was not here on problematic Weyr business.
"Weyrleader." Oselle turned from the pot she'd been standing at with a spoon in one hand, the other poised to catch any drips. "Here, try this."
No weyrbrat was ever going to turn away the first tastings of a meal. I'serin dutifully opened his mouth to sample the soup. He hummed thoughtfully as he swallowed. "Quite tasty," he remarked. "Hearty. That will go well with the weather."
The drudge beside the Headwoman flushed and bobbed her head in thanks as Oselle gestured to her. "This is Misonne, Weyrleader. Misonne, this is I'serin."
The drudge curtsied. "Pleasure to meet you."
The Weyrleader of Dragonsfall Weyr bowed in a courtly manner. "Well met," he said.
Oselle sampled a small bit of the broth herself. "Despite the Weyrleader's approval I think it needs more salt. Check with Juma. And add a few more cups of water and barley to bulk it out enough to fill a serving cauldron, please. Well done."
"Thank you, ma'am." The drudge curtsied again to I'serin and then turned back to her task.
Oselle gestured for I'serin to follow her out of the Kitchens. "What brings you to the Lower Caverns today, I'serin?"
"A birthingday present for the Weyrwoman," he answered, cutting straight to the matter since they were both very busy people. "Her birthingday is in two days and I would like to surprise her with a small cake to celebrate. Is that something you or your team could manage in such a short amount of time?"
"Of course. What sort of cake were you thinking about?"
"I leave that to you, as I know very little about cakes. But I do believe that her favorite fruit is cherry."
The snowy location made cherries a delicacy. "I will need to requisition a dragonrider to pick up some fresh ones, unless you think she'd prefer brandied cherries?"
"Fresh, I believe. I can offer one of my riders as a ferry if need be," he answered. There were a few riders in his Wing who would gladly run an errand that would be a gift to the Weyrwoman.
She nodded. "Have them find me tomorrow and I will give them marks and the location of an orchard. Did you want to deliver the cake yourself or should I have someone send it up to her on her birthingday, with your regards?"
"Send it to my office, please," he asked. "Our usual lunch is on that day and will be a good surprise for it." He gave the Headwoman a quick but still courtly bow. "Thank you for accommodating me on such short notice."
Oselle inclined her head in a slight nod. "It is not a problem, Weyrleader," she said, as if fresh cherries were easy to come by in the frozen Weyr they called home. Let him worry about other things, she thought. A cake was a simple enough task.
"I will let you get back to your work," he replied. "Have a good day, Headwoman."
