Cosani put her tray down with a sharp _clack_ as she sat across from Reyela. "Ugh. He's so _gross_!"
Reyela looked up from her half-eaten plate of preserves and bread with a welcoming smile. "Who is gross?"
"N'vanik. Grinding on that greenrider, _again_, and then slobbering all over him in front of everyone. I didn't see it, thank Faranth, but I had to hear about it all night. Gross, gross, gross." And confusing.
The younger greenrider laughed. "Shells, your Da loves making a scene, doesn't he! I _did_ see that dance, unfortunately!" She leaned forward, her grin turning wicked. "Want me to describe it to you? In detail?"
"Noooooo!" Cosani put her fingers in her ears.
Reyela danced her fingers across the table and then made it look like her hands were humping. Her grin widened at Cosani's expression and she made a rude gesture. "Like that!"
Cosani squeezed her eyes shut. "Stop it!"
"D'you think they did it before or after that dance? Or both?" Reyela batted her eyelashes. "Either way I bet you they did it in a linen closet somewhere like a couple of degenerate Candidates."
Cosani groaned and then pointed at Reyela. "That. _That_ is the worst part. People kept asking me questions about their relationship. As if I know what's going on in his stupid head, as if I _want_ to know if my dad is shagging some man." 'Some man' as if she didn't know who Z'kim was. As if she hadn't met him. N'vanik had introduced him as a friend, but had this been going on the whole time?
"You have to admit that it's pretty weird because last I checked, Loseth is a bronze dragon."
"It's really weird. He's not supposed to like men, it's . . . " Cosani caught herself before she could say 'wrong'. She didn't have a problem with male greenriders or blueriders, or people in the lower caverns who were like that. But this was just different somehow.
Reyela wondered what her father would say, or her grandfather. Bronzeriders and former Weyrleaders both. "So he really is sleeping with Z'kim? It's not just an act to... I don't know. Provoke some uptight Lord Holder into shorting his tithe so that he can go to the Council and get him deposed and replaced with someone N'vanik likes?" Not that she'd thought about it far too much, just like everyone else had.
Cosani blinked. "What? No. I don't know. It's not like I asked him. I don't _want_ to know!"
"I wouldn't want to know either," Reyela muttered. "And I don't know why your father _does_. I mean, I don't advertise who I'm sleeping with so publicly. Nobody with any sense of decorum does."
"Well, yeah. He doesn't have any. Do you remember when he was involved with Rhosyn?" Cosani rolled her eyes. "I got a half sister because he had to go cause drama at a whole other Weyr."
Reyela made a face. "Maybe he was bored?"
"I wish he'd find less embarrassing ways to entertain himself." Cosani picked up her fork and stabbed at her breakfast. She hadn't seen them dancing last night, or the infamous kiss, but she'd seen part of their previous dance. The images were seared into her brain. Them practically humping each other. Her father looking at a man the way he looked at women. Which was also gross, but easier to ignore.
"Tell him to keep it in his pants. You're probably the only person he'd listen to."
Cosani snorted. "_Talryne_ is the only person he listens to." She frowned. "Shards, why would he _do_ this to her?" Maybe Talryne didn't care. She hadn't stopped N'vanik from being publicly dramatic with Rhosyn either.
That made Reyela pause. "She was wearing pink like N'vanik and Z'kim... maybe she's into it?"
Cosani thought about it and immediately regretted it. "Ugggghhh. I don't want to think about N'vanik with . . . no. No, no, no!" How was this getting even worse?
"What, you don't want to hear about your _father_ sleeping around?" Reyela laughed, then relented. "Fine, spoilsport. I barely saw you at the Hatching. _Please_ tell me you were up to something?"
"Hiding from gross, invasive questions," Cosani said. Then a little smile tugged at her lips. "I might have met a bluerider from Windswept Islands."
Finally, gossip that she actually _wanted_ to hear. No matter how much she enjoyed watching her friend squirm, Reyela didn't actually want to hear about N'vanik and his exploits. It felt too close to her own family, and she worried about Cyradis - and none of it was something she could do anything about. She rested her chin on her fist and looked expectantly at Cosani. "Tell me _everything_."
"Handsome, flirty, and I'll probably never see him again. He was perfect." Cosani's smile widened and she leaned in to give her friend all the details.
